Matiere Interview

Interview with Scot Shandalove + Jake Zeitlin
Founder + Creative Director | Matiere
by Guest Editor Raun LaRose

1. You recently showed during the first ever NYFWM. How was the experience and what did it mean for your brand?

Jake: It felt symbolic that our first official presentation was part of the first ever New York Fashion Week Mens. The brand has received a lot of attention on the trade show circuit, but showing in New York allowed us exposure on a much bigger scale. It was an amazing experience and we got an amazing response. We place so much attention on fabric, texture and detail it was nice getting the chance to walk people through the collection and have them see the clothing up close.

Check out the Fall/Winter 2015 menswear collection from New York brand John Elliot.

“My dad always used to say, ‘interesting people live outside their comfort zones.’ That phrase has stuck with me more than I think he ever intended. The most interesting people I know aren’t afraid to try something new. When I was 8 years old, I sent my first designs to Nike. Their reply is a treasured inspiration that has traveled with me ever since. Starting an apparel company was never if, it was when.”
