I love it because it's so different from my usual taste and always introduces me to new artists that I would not have heard otherwise. STOLEN FROM STRANGERS (JUN MIYAKE) / Tokyo-native Jun Miyake's new Cd, Stolen from Strangers is gorgeous, melodic, whimsical, and a must-hear from start to finish, mixing all styles and genres, from French lounge to Brazilian samba. 9. BETO VILLARES / Sao Paolo's Beto Villares's debut album is a thoroughly modern and futuristic take on Brazil's rich musical past, with a great collection of well thought out, and beautifully crafted songs. 8. RADIO RETALIATION (THIEVERY CORPORATION) / The Thievery Corporation is back so expect a potent mix of down tempo and chilled out lounge music stretched across the globe, with guests like Seu Jorge and Anushka Shankar providing excellent backdrop to the smooth and smart grooves of Thievery. 7. HOTEL COSTES 11 / Yet another chic and timeless offering from the legendary Hotel Costes as this 11th volume serves up the best in lounge music today, from Marsmobil to Dublex, along with a few retro selections to liven up the mix. 6. A MAD & FAITHFUL TELLING (DEVOTCHKA) / With a sad and melancholic vein running throughout, Devotchka manages to fuse punk, dance, Mariachi, rock and a bevy of other styles for one of the most arresting and interesting listens around. 5. NU BALEARICA / Fred Deakin of the legendary Lemonjelly and Ministry of Sound have teamed up to create one of the best compilations this year in Nu Balearica, a sampling of the Balearic vibe that has spread to a Scandinavia, Paris, London, Berlin and New York. 4. A NEW CHANCE (TOUGH ALLIANCE) / Sweden's Tough Alliance knows how to mix catchy pop hooks with new electronica and make it ready for the dancefloor. 3. AN INVITATION (INARES GEORGE WITH VAN DYKE PARKS) / "If butterflies could dance, this would be their soundtrack." Inara George and Van Dyke Parks throw away all musical conventions and put together a truly original album full of George's flirty vocals and Van Dyke Park's whimsical instrumentation. 2. BRAND NEW SECONDHAND (BEATCONDUCTOR) / 80s soul, boogie, full on disco, party hip hop, Latin and reggae, it all gets mashed together, and brilliantly at that, on Beatconductor, the master DJ from Sweden, newest, Brand New Secondhand. 1. ALAS I CANNOT SWIM (LAURA MARLING) / Beautiful and melancholic melodies amidst sparse and simple arrangements are what make English "it" girl Laura Marling worth listening to. |
