| Jaws + MoMA What's the most classic summer movie EVER?! JAWS!!!. "The massive success of Jaws, released in the U.S. on June 20, 1975, gave us the term summer blockbuster, invented the contemporary event film, and redefined the seasonal rhythm of American moviegoing. Filmed mostly on Martha's Vineyard, that bastion of summering folk, Jaws tells the simple story of a great white shark with a penchant for eating foolish bathers who ignore the warnings of harried police chief Martin Brody." It's playing this Friday and Saturday at MoMA. You can be sure I'll be there on Saturday, sitting in the air conditioned theater watching it. I don't think I've ever seen it on the big screen, truth be told, and I have to see the opening scene in a theater. Get more info here and tickets here. Did you know Jaws was based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel inspired by the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916. God I love Wikipedia. Checkout the full entry here. It's full of interesting info on the film. And of course, watch the 1975 trailer and listen to the theme song. |
