Margiela + IT Shop 798

Maison Martin Margiela and Hong Kong super-retailer I.T have collaborated on a new exhibition space in 798, Beijing's Bauhaus munitions factory district turned cultural playground.

The factory space has been divided into a bevy of distinct spaces flaunting the Belgian designer's famously intemperate creativity, and read more like a series of installation pieces than a brand showcase. Standout displays include mannequins with clothing projected onto them alongside mugshots of the full outfits pasted on the walls, a full mannequin installation comprised entirely of white cotton, life sized model cutouts made of polaroid snaps, a runway show movie theatre (bereft of jujubes, unfortunately), and a deconstructionist's dream sequence of ephemera relating to the history of the atelier.

The opening this past weekend had Beijing's pretty-kits out in droves, despite the persistent (and surely government inspired) rainfall. Particularly notable was the attendance of China's first UN Goodwill Ambassador Zhou Xun, alongside nightlife impresario Henry Li and the usual assortment of socialites, PR magnates, a lonely Superfuturist, and more 6-foot women than you could shake John Casablancas at.

The exhibition will be open through July 1st, after which time the space will give over to the 2nd in a series of four designer showcases, this one for Kawakubo Rei and Commes Des Garcons.
