| Rick Owens New York I stopped by the new Rick Owens store in Tribeca (250 Hudson Street) over the weekend to see what all the hype is about. For anyone who's unfamiliar, Rick Owens is THE darling of the fashion world and has been for the past several years. "Rick Owens, (born 1962) is an American fashion designer known for his edgy fashions favored by rock stars and people who like to cultivate an avant garde reputation. Since 2003, he has worked out of Paris where in addition to his own line, he serves as creative director for Revillon, the furrier." Says Owens about his designs: "I try to make clothes the way Lou Reed does music -- minimal chord changes, and direct. It is sweet but kind of creepy. It's about giving everything I make a worn, softened feeling. It's about an elegance being tinged with a bit of the barbaric, the sloppiness of something dragging and the luxury of not caring." And there's always something interesting, including his interpretation of the Arabian Goat's Eye. "The Arabian Goats Eye is a cock ring with a goats eye attached around it for extra pleasure." Owens' version, of course, is very chic and housed in a discreet white, textured leather carrying case. You have to see it to realize it's genius. Click here to see a pic of a mass produced version. As always, his clothes are amazing, albeit very expensive, and the space is pretty standard for highend New York retail, save a wall behind the cashiers that fills with black smoke. And let's not forget the Goth on staff, who paints his face with mime-like white makeup and has a look that's so perfect for the store and the brand. |
