Jeremy Kost Interview

» Name + Age
Jeremy Kost - 31 (since when did this become an acceptable question!!)

» Job Title
Artist

» What'd you want to be when you were little?
Indiana Jones

» First memory of creating art?
My friend Pedro Andrade was coatchecking/bar tending in the East Village, specifically coatchecking at the old Ave A Cock. One night in 2002 I took the Polaroid camera that was on the wall of his apt out and began taking pix. The one attached is possibly my first Polaroid and surely from the first night!

» Who was your favorite artist/photographer as a kid? Now?
The ancient Egyptians. I was obsessed. Then in college it was the paparazzi who snapped Brad Pitt nude. (I learned how to use the internet searching for those pix.) I've only in the last few years learned about art, but I'm lucky today to be so inspired by Douglas Gordon, Terence Koh, Robert Mapplethorpe, and so many others. I'm even luckier to count some of my favorite artists as my friends... They inspire me each and every day.

» When did you move to New York and where did you live?
2004 to a tiiiiiny room I sublet in soho. It was exactly the hellish moving experience nearly anyone (unless you're uber loaded) has.

» Favorite thing about New York? Least favorite?
Um a few things... Anonymity, diversity, but mostly the notion that you truly never know where a day can take you if you let it. Least favorite thing....the DUST!

» What other cities or place do you like to spend time in?
Every city in Thailand and Berlin. Here in the States, I love to go visit fam in Seattle.

» What inspires you?
ART and other artists! Visiting with an artist friend in their studio or even walking around the city ALWAYS recharges me and makes me want to make better work. It never fails.

» What types of photos did you start out doing?  How did the Polaroid style come about?
See above. Totally gay homo pix! I owe so much to Formika for his parties and to Amanda Lepore for being who she is!

» As we all know, Polaroid film has been discontinued.  Do you foresee a time when there will be no more left?  If so, how long do you think it will be until then?  What will you do?
Yes for sure. I'm starting to come to terms with it and I'm kinda getting ulcers. I've been making a lot more video work lately and I'm getting really comfortable with it (you can see some of the pieces in the video section of www.jeremykost.com). The one thing I'll miss about them is how they immediately leave this broken narrative, leaving one's mind to put the story together. I'm trying to continue that in my video.

» What's your dream project? If you had all the money and resources, what would you do?
Ummmm whatever it would be, it'd be in a solo show at MoMA.

» Top 5 songs on your iPod?
My ipod was stolen and my dear friend Julie gave me an old one of hers... Its so great because I never hear the same song twice and is usually something I hadn't heard! In the gym, its mostly Junior Vasquez stuff (Yes, I'm that gay).

» Favorite 5 websites?
Facebook, Asianpunkboy.com (Terence actually has a polaroid I took of him and Eve on it now from Vienna), I love Nayland Blake, Brian Kenny, and Slava's blogs too. Printed Matter shouldn't be missed either!

» First concert? Favorite concert?
Dave Matthews Band in 1994 at Rockefellers in Houston in front of 200 people.... Watching the Rolling Stones in the 2nd row with my dear friend and doctor at the time, Moody in DC. He was the official doc of all the venues and he always had sick passes. Was so priveleged that he took me!

» Any dirty little pop culture secrets you want to share? (Like you watch Gilmore Girls or listen to P!nk when nobody's around?) Anything. Really.
Ummmm I'm kinda getting into Gossip Girl and I really do love cheesey horror flicks.

» This is where you get to write whatever you want.
Ummm I'd really love to point people to both of my websites... I've just launched www.jeremykost.com with a much more collector, curator, press focused approach. There people can see the objectification series which will be debuted in a few days at Dallas's Light & Sie gallery, which are pictures of boys, cast online and photographed intimately. If anyone is interested and feel like they have what it takes to be in the forthcoming book and series, they should email thru the site! Also, we gotta mention www.roidrage.com for my onging conceptual project of celebrity photographs without text.... People will soon see our (Jeremy Kost + Ju$t Another Rich Kid's) t-shirt collab there too!
