Andres Serrano's SHIT @ Yvonne Lambert

I remember it as if it were yesterday: going to the I.M. Pei designed museum at Cornell and seeing Piss Christ. (If you're unfamiliar with the work click here.) The NEA and the late Jesse Helms were up in arms over the piece, as they'd indirectly and unknowingly funded its production. Definitely checkout this transcript of a Senate discussion on the piece.

New York artist Andres Serrano - the man behind Piss Christ -- is at it again. This time with concurrent shows in New York (09.04 - 10.04.08) and Paris (09.12 - 10.16.08) at Yvonne Lambert entitled SHIT.

"Although the theme is considered taboo, excrement has a discernable documentation in the history of art. In 1961 Piero Manzoni's unveiled his Merda d'Artista metal cans that supposedly contained the artist's stool, priced according to weight. Karen Finley smeared herself with symbolic feces and even Andy Warhol was quoted in the National Review saying that he would like to market his own excrement as jewelry (he felt it was merely a matter of tasteful packaging)."

Don't miss the opening reception for the show in New York on 09.04.08 from 6-8pm.
