| 3.1 Philip Lim Although I wouldn't personally wear it head-to-toe, the Spring 2009 collection by 3.1 Philip Lim has some pieces that have tickled my fancy. Lim, who debuted in 2005 with a his 3.1 womenswear collection, didn't branch out into men's until 2007. While seemingly unknown to the masses, Lim is far from being an unknown designer. His lines are sold in over 250 boutiques in 28 countries around the world and he's recently opened 2 more freestanding stores -- one in Tokyo and one in LA -- in addition to the original in New York. And let's not forget the CFDA stamp of approval he got a few years back. No matter how you look at it: Philip Lim's is big time. "Classic with a sense of madness" is how Lim once described his work. His knack is for giving accessible, wearable clothes that little something extra is all his. When you see the collections, simplicity is a defining factor in the overall look of the pieces, but simple his clothes are not. He masterfully combines complexity and simplicity in a way that is pleasing to the eye and flattering to the wearer. Take a look at his site for images and videos from his SS09 collections. Additionally, check out this video from last fashion week. The clothes really shine on the runway. And don't forget to check out select pieces of menswear that have arrived at Oak for spring. I already picture myself in the tank top on a sunny spring day biking down Lafayette on my way to Pinche Taqueria to get some tacos for lunch! |
