Patti Smith Dream Of Life DVD For all you hardcore Patti Smith fans and for anyone who missed its run at Film Forum, Dream Of Life is now available on DVD. Finally! Eleven years in the making, Patti Smith: Dream of Life (a feature length documentary with recent concert footage) is a unique and intimate portrait of the renowned singer, songwriter, poet, and activist. Patti Smith's music, poetry, and politics are fearless, funny, raw, and original. Photographer-director Steven Sebring creates a beautiful collage of images, memories, and performances, illuminating the complexities and capturing the essence of this distinctive, legendary icon. The film traces Patti Smith's punk-poet roots through the trials of daily life and untimely deaths that have formed her life and art. Smith narrates the film touching on her early days in New York City, the people dearest to her (late husband Fred "Sonic" Smith, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Mapplethorpe, and others), her family, and the political causes she champions. Through beautiful cinematography (both black & white and color), Sebring captures the essential nature of this vital and relevant American artist. She told a short, but sweet anecdote about walking down Bowery recently and getting lost because it looked so different with all of the recent construction. I know I've said it before, but John Varvatos is not what Bowery needs. He may think he's rock n roll, but he's just a trumped up version of Banana Republic with a great branding and PR machine behind him Get the DVD, though. You'll love it. Not only do you get more insight into Patti's life, but you get a feel for the romantic ideal of New York that we all moved here for that's hopefully not gone forever. There's nothing like a good recession to weed out all those bottle blondes who moved here because they loved Sex In The City and thought every girl could work for Anna Wintour and make a movie about it. I hear flights back to Colorado are real cheap right now, in case any of you all read the site. |
