| Den + Richard Chai It's that time again: Odin's ever changing concept store Den has closed and re-opened, this time featuring the designs of New York designer Richard Chai. Having recently been selected as a guest womenswear designer for the successful Target GO International campaign, Richard Chai has a repertoire in men's having served as the Design Director for the Marc Jacobs' men's and women's collections and the launch of the Marc by Marc Jacobs men's line. The Den space reflects a minimal and architectural approach, one that parallels the Richard's design sensibility. The installation will carry a large part of his Men's Spring 09 collection that was presented in Paris along with some new and exclusive pieces cut specially for the store. In addition to the men's collection will be a small capsule of Richard Chai womenswear, which features such signature design elements as French seaming, arc details, and refined tailoring. Also showcased in Richard's installation will be the artwork of his friend, artist Daniel Peddle. Chai, a New York native, began his career in fashion at an early age with a prestigious internship at Geoffrey Beene while still an undergraduate at Parsons School of Design. Upon graduation from Parsons, Chai continued his studies at the Lissa School in Paris, during which time he worked as a sketcher at Lanvin. Returning to New York one year later, Chai immediately embarked on his practical experience as an assistant designer at Armani Exchange. He then joined Donna Karan as a designer for the DKNY and D collections. In September 2001, Chai was appointed Creative Design Director of all TSE brands, including men's, women's and TSE Say, marking the first time in the company's history that one person oversaw all brands. Through his experiences at some of the world's most influential fashion houses, Chai developed a keen eye for detail, a reverence for architectural design elements, and a strong belief in the importance and value of the construction of clothes. This boy's got some experience under his belt! You can get a taste of what Chai's design sense is all about by checking out the men's and women's lines currently on view in the East Village at Den (East 11th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues).
