BASE Album Club Picks

One of our favorite stores in the world--super cool Miami store BASE--has hooked up this.hearts.on.fire. once again with their Album Club Picks. The picks are a very well-curated set of some of the sexiest, coolest music anywhere. I love it because it's so different from my usual taste and always introduces me to new artists that I would not have heard otherwise. You can listen to samples and buy each album by clicking on the links below.

10. -HOME IS WHERE YOUR HEART WAS (PLEJ) / Mixing electronic elements with live instrumentation, Plej has turned dance music on its ear, allowing the form to be infiltrated by chilled lounge music whilst still keeping its groove.

9. HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR / New York DJ Andy Butler and friends have fashioned an old school dance record with an entirely new and fresh feel with their debut disc Hercules and Love Affair.

8. CARRYING STARS (N'GRANDJEAN) / Nikolaj Grandjean is nothing less than a beautiful singer/songwriter, as evidenced by the captivating songs on his folksy debut album, Carrying Stars.

7. THE BUDOS BAND II / The Budos Band is an 11-piece band hailing from New York City's Staten Island that specializes in retro soul mixed with Afro-beat funk and classic R & B.

6. BEST OF (MONTEFIORI COCKTAIL) / The cocktail lounge sound that was prevalent in the early 60's is recaptured and modernized with elements of the 21st Century, like house, breakbeat and drum n'bass in Italian brothers Kikko and Kekko's Montefiori Cocktail.

5. IN BED WITH SPACE 11 / Bruno from Ibiza, the man behind the legendary Café Del Mar series gives a two disc set of pure musical genius with the In Bed with Space series' second attempt at lounge.

4. PUDDLE CITY LIGHTS (WINDMILL) / Borrowing heavily from a bevy of U.S. indie acts, Brit sensation Matthew Thomas Dillon, aka Windmill, still manages to use his unique vocals and melodramatic world view to his advantage and craft a beguiling debut album.

3. FLEET FOXES / Folk, classic rock, country, and most ominously, California pop, are all mixed in with harmonious vocals to create well crafted, spirit-lifting compositions on Seattle's Fleet Foxes self titled debut album.

2. FREESTYLE SINGLE MINDED (ADRIAN GIBSON) / The real cutting edge of London's funky underground springs to life on Freestyle's collection of 45's and 12" on Freestyle Single-Minded.

1. ETHIOPIQUES / This is the fourth volume in the Ethiopiques series, a collection of classic Ethiopian jazz and funk heretofore unavailable in Cd format.
