Jack*%ss · Cold War Kids · Superdome 1. It's a great day in the artworld when none other than Johnny Knoxville inspires a gallery show. Seriously! How rad is that? "Susan Inglett is pleased to present Jack *%ss, a curated exhibition to run 29 May
through July 31, 2008. Lifted from the annals of MTV history, Jack *%ss takes its title from the eponymous American television program featuring the stunts and pranks of a cast led by pop impresario Johnny Knoxville. Knoxville came to the public’s attention in 1999 when he agreed to test various self defense devices by being tasered, maced and eventually shot while wearing a bulletproof vest. Almost three decades earlier, the artist Chris Burden choreographed a performance in which he had an assistant fire a single shot to his left arm." Artists included: Vito Acconci, Bas Jan Ader, The Bruce High Quality Foundation, Chris Burden, Sophie Calle, Yves Klein, Carolee Schneemann, and more. Click here for more details. If you've not seen any of Chris Burden's work, you've gotta check it out. He's been set on fire, been nailed to a car, and, of course, he's been shot at. Watch this video Documentation of Selected Works 1971-74. It has clips from some of the artist's work with narration by the artist. Don't miss the video for Through the Night Softly, where he held his hands behind his back and crawled through about 50 feet of glass. It's one of a series of 4 videos that were shown on TV during ad spots Burden bought in his quest to have his art shown on national TV. 2. Have you heard of the Cold War Kids?? If not, you need to check them out. They rock. Literally. And they're playing in Prospect Park for free on Friday, 06.27.08 at 7pm. Click here for info. And here for the full summer lineup for the Celebrate Brooklyn 2008 lineup. Don't forget to checkout the band's official site, their MySpace, and this mix I made over the weekend that includes Hang Me Up To Dry. I'm listening to Saint John now. It's sick. 3. Checkout SUPERDOME, the current show up at Palais De Tokyo in Paris. "The Superdome is a mythical stadium: built in 1975 in New Orleans (Louisiana), it has hosted numerous Super Bowls, a Rolling Stones concert, Pope John Paul II, the Republican Convention and refugees of Hurricane Katrina. Marc-Olivier Wahler puts forward SUPERDOME: a new session composed of five solo exhibitions balancing between entertainment and desolation, decibels and prayers, high-tech and chaos, as the continuation of a program testing the notion of the elasticity of art which started at the Palais de Tokyo with Five Billion Years." Of note, an exceptional talk on 06.05.08 at 7:30pm with Kenneth Anger on the occasion of the exhibition of new paintings by Aleister Crowley and The Kills in concert on 07.09.08 at 8pm. And, of course, all of the art. Make sure to checkout the info page for the show to get all the details. |
