Olafur Eliasson's NYC Waterfalls · Phunk Studio + Levi's · Robber Baron @ Moss · The Long Weekend + Nan Goldin @ Tate Modern 1. This is why I love living in New York. New York City Waterfalls. "Conceived by Eliasson and commissioned by the Public Art Fund, The New York City Waterfalls will showcase New York City's natural environment alongside the City's industrial and commercial landscape. Sited in the historic New York Harbor, which has served as the gateway to America for nearly four centuries and a point of origin for the City's growth, the Waterfalls will introduce a breathtaking element into the heart of New York's waterfront." There will be 4 man-made waterfalls of 90 to 120 feet. They will be softly lit at night and available for everyone to see. The project will launch in late June and run through October. Read the full press release on the Public Art Fund's site. Don't forget to checkout Olafur Eliasson's site. He's is hot hot hot right now. 2. If you're in Paris, stop by the rue Etienne Marcel Levi's Flagship shop to checkout the solo show by :phunk studio, which will run from 30th May to 24th June 2008. The design collective out of Singapore created limited edition tees for Levi's S/S 08 collection and will take over the store in their dysfunctional apocalyptic style. Make sure to checkout their website. It's chock full of info and imagery from current and past projects. They're body of work is quite impressive. Of note: their show Universe Of Modern Mythology @ J Chen gallery and their prints @ Maxalot. Don't forget to checkout the collective's bio on MOCA Taipei's site. 3. I try to stop by Moss (150 Greene Street) at least once a month. It really is equal parts museum and store. Unlike a museum, everything's for sale, but the quality is museum-like and the prices keep it well out of reach of most of us. On the block this month are some pieces you don't want to miss. Robber Baron (the complete Suite tales of power, corruption, art and industry, cast in bronze). "In May 2007, Moss previewed the Cabinet - the first fully realized piece from the Suite of five elements which comprise Studio Job's ambitious masterwork, Robber Baron. The four additional pieces - Jewel Safe, Table, Standing Lamp and Mantle Clock - at the time as yet unrealized, were presented as drawings. One year later, we are proud to present Robber Baron, the complete Suite." The pieces are on view through 06.08.08. Don't forget to checkout Pyramids of Makkum "an exuberant, monumental multiple layer flower vase created in response to Europe's tulip mania" also currently on view in the store. 4. I love the Tate Modern. Maybe more than MoMA, but I'm pretty sure it's only because it's in London. If I lived in London, I'm sure I'd be saying the same thing in reverse. Coming this weekend: UBS Openings: The Long Weekend "brings you three days and nights of extraordinary live events and performances at Tate Modern. During the day, the gallery will be buzzing with performances to watch and opportunities to get involved, themed around the States of Flux Collection display, which explores change, progress and movement. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Turbine Hall is the dramatic setting for spectacular evening events combining music and visuals." Click here for all the details. Lots of hot work, talks, and most of it is FREE! My favorite four letter word, right after free booze, that is. You don't want to miss Nan Goldin with Patrick Wolf and John Kelly on Saturday 05.24.08 from 9 - 11pm. |
