MPD Design 2008 · Blow-Up · Oakazine Issue 2 1. ICFF (05.17 - 05.20.08) is upon us. Make sure to spend some time wandering through the Meat Packing District for MPD Design 2008. "The theme of Meatpacking District Design 2008 is YOUTH. Not only are we featuring many new international designers—never before shown in New York City, but we also wanted to invite you to share the exuberance of youth by looking at design, art and fashion with a fresh set of eyes. We hope you enjoy the diverse exhibitions, learn something new at one of the panel discussions and spend a little time in the newly created Gansevoort Square across from the Theory Building." Checkout the online pamphlet detailing all events here. What's hot: HARDCORE New Finnish Design, the New York Magazine Panel Discussion, The High Line Viewing Station, YouHappyNow @ Ivy Brown Gallery, and the new Yohji store at 1 Ganservoort Street, which judging from the photo is where Ford Models used to be back in the day. Check the PDF. It's chock full of info. There's lots of cocktail parties and you know how I feel about free booze. 2. Jane Birkin fans mark your calendars. On 05.23.08 @ 7pm, MoMA is screening Blow-Up, the 1966 classic directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. The film is based on a short story by Julio Cortazar, features the music of legendary Herbie Hancock, and stars David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, and the forever fashion "It" girl Jane Birkin. "Antonioni's foray into Swinging Sixties London is as metaphysical as it is sexy. This spellbinding picture-puzzle of a film derives its erotic charge as much from photographer Hemmings's determined pursuit of the ever-elusive truth contained in his grainy images - most mysteriously, a lovers' tryst in a deserted park that may or may not have ended in murder - as it does from his unfailing seduction of statuesque fashion models." Read the full synopsis. Watch the trailer and this Yardbirds video from the film. Click here for info on getting tickets. They can be purchased in person only, which adds a bit of a kink to it all. This one's for die hards only. 3. From it's Brooklyn beginnings to it's fancy new NoHo shop, Oak is growing up quickly. Not only are they shooting editorial and featuring the photos on their site, but they also have a magazine - Oakazine. They're releasing Issue 2 tomorrow night at Bowery Electric (formerly Remote Lounge and now owned by the owners of Hi Fi, Black and White, and Niagra) from 9pm - 2am. It's invite only and, of course, space is VERY LIMITED! But you never know. Give it a try. |
