Assume Astro Vivid Focus · Radical Advertising · Speed Racer

1. I thought the Bjork party in LIC thrown by Deitch might be a one off thing, but it seems like Deitch is trying to get us to make repeated trips to Deitch Studios LIC (4-40 44th Drive On The East River) whether we like it or not. A show opened Friday -- Absolutely Venomous Accurately Fallacious (Naturally Delicious) -- by assume vivid astro focus and runs through 08.16.08. "Passing the colorfully muraled exterior of the building, guests enter from the riverside entrance beside a neon atom bomb explosion into the main installation. This large gallery space will be filled with collaborative sculpture, murals, and rugged found materials inspired by the construction sites found throughout the city and especially from Williamsburg into Long Island City." Read the full press release here. Make sure to checkout avaf's site, including this link to freebies, where they let you download files for decals, posters, and other such things.

2. If you happen to be in Dusseldorf, stop by the NRW-Forum Kultur und Wirtschaft to checkout Radical Advertising. "A special focus of the NRW-Forum is on photography and new media, as is reflected in exhibitions featuring the work of Peter Lindbergh, Helmut Newton, Anton Corbijn and Miwa Yanagi and the aesthetics of video. Another focus is on fashion, with exhibitions dedicated to Alexander McQueen, Manolo Blahnik or Vivienne Westwood." The info on the Radical Advertising show is in German and let's just say my German isn't what it used to be. What I do know is the show includes work by the following artists: Banksy, Mauricio Cattelan, ilvy Fleury, Jenny Holzer, Richard Prince, Murakami, Tom Sachs, and Terry Richardson. Not to mention a Comme des Garcons guerilla store. Checkout their site for more details.

3. Speed Racer. The story is a bit brainless, but don't go see it for the acting, although the all-star cast is a bit impressive: John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Emile Hirsh, and Christina Ricci to name just a few. Click here for the full cast list. True, the story's not the most challenging. It's a movie based on an anime series and plays out like a video game come to life. "Speed Racer was one of the first truly successful anime franchises in the United States. The pivotal episode in which Racer X reveals his identity to Speed (The Trick Race) was selected by TV Guide as one of the most memorable moments in TV history." Checkout the full history on Wikipedia. The reason to see it: for the visuals. It's pretty amazing. If you have any inclination towards art/graphics/design, check this one out. Checkout the trailer to see for yourself.
