Doc Martens Boot Contest/Party Of Life 2008/If Looks Could Kill/Earliest Oil Paintings Discovered

1. Create. Nominate. Dominate. Dr. Martens is back at it this year with The Brief, an online contest that challenges the public to create the design for the next Dr. Martens boot. Artists start your engines. "Dr. Martens offers two blank iconic canvases, The Original 8-eye and 14-eye boot, for anyone and everyone to create a new design. Budding and established designers and those who don't consider themselves designers can nominate a design." You'll notice the ad at the top of the page. Click it! Or click here for access to The Brief's site with all of the details, including who the panel are (so you'll know who to pay off), a gallery of the competition thus far, and a look at last year's winners. Now get to it!

2. Speaking of Keith Haring, Christina Visca and The Keith Haring Foundation are hosting a party at Pascha on 05.04.08 called "THE PARTY OF LIFE 2008". Like the mural that's being restored on Houston, it's to coincide with what would have been the late artist's 50th birthday. Checkout the Facebook event listing and get tickets here. Everyone gets a Keith Haring/Jeremy Scott t-shirt and all proceeds will be donated to AIDS Walk New York. It's sure to be an amazing night.

3. Beginning 05.10 and running through 05.31.08, the Tate Modern's running a must-see film festival for any art and fashion lover. "From stolen pearls to a glove left at the scene of the crime, from an excess of red lipstick to the postmodern gangster silhouette, the 2nd Fashion in Film Festival: If Looks Could Kill: Cinema's Images of Fashion, Crime and Violence explores the compelling links between cinema, fashion, crime and violence." Click here for all the details, including showtimes and how to get tickets. What you won't want to miss: Cindy Sherman's Office Killer, Dario Argento's The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, and Elio Petri's The Tenth Victim.

4. Move over Dutch masters. Scientists have found what they described this week as the earliest oil paintings ever discovered. Where? The Bamiyan region of Afghanistan. (Clears throat) "Murals found on cave walls in Afghanistan prove that painting with oil had been going on in Asia for centuries before artists used the technique in Europe, scientists said this week. Until now, art historians believed that oil painting started in Europe in the 15th century." Read the full article on CNN's site. This is definitely big news in the art world.
