John Waters + Crybaby/Chris Kettle/Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret/Haring Mural On Houston 1. Everyone knows I love me some John Waters. Although it was a boxoffice bomb, Cry Baby is tops on my list. I mean if for no other reason that Traci Lords, Iggy Pop, and Patty Hearst are in it. "Cry-Baby is a 1990 musical directed by John Waters. It stars Johnny Depp as 1950s teen rebel Wade 'Cry-Baby' Walker. The film is a parody of teen musicals such as Grease, of Elvis Presley movies, and of 1950s 'juvenile delinquent' movies such as The Wild One and (specifically) Rebel Without a Cause." Read all about it here. Why am I telling you this, you ask? Cry Baby is opening on Broadway. Officially that is. It's been in preview mode for a few weeks (aka half price tickets), but tomorrow is official opening night. If you wanna shell out $115 for tickets, do so here. If you join the Facebook group for the show here, you can get free (first 20 people to show up at the box office) or $20 tickets for a special Facebook performance on 04.30.08 at 8pm. I'm on my way now. 2. I've just come across a UK artist on Opus Art's website and am in love with his work. "Brighton painter Chris Kettle is notorious for his subversive approach to still life and his recent work draws inspiration from the work of the Dutch Masters. The artist uses inanimate objects ordinarily associated with pure study as a means with which to explore many facets of human emotion, reworking these classical symbols in his own distinctive, often dark and brooding style. The result of this marriage of classic and contemporary is a highly engaging body of work in which the artist presents a variety of sentiments that are both touching and humorous." Read all about it here and checkout more of his work on his website. Love it! 3. Are you there God? It's Me, Margaret. Please make Hillary Clinton go away. Before Friday would be great. I promise I'll floss every day. Thanks. 4. There's a bit of good news for the yuppie-blighted area near Houston and Bowery. "The Keith Haring Foundation, Goldman Properties and Deitch Projects announce the recreation of Keith Haring’s celebrated Houston Street and Bowery mural. The mural became an instant downtown landmark after Keith painted it in the summer of 1982. The mural was up for only a few months in the summer of 1982 before it was painted out but its image remains imprinted in the memory of many people who were part of the downtown artist community in the early 1980s." Checkout the full press release here on Deitch's site, as well as a larger image of the mural. It's a super bright, orange day-glo piece that's sure to cause quite a stir. Don't forget to stop by and have a look at the Carmine Street Pool mural, which if anyone's reading this could use a fresh coat of paint, if you ask me. |
