McDermott & McGough/DRV-IN/Everything Must GO 1. If you're in Dublin, stop by the Irish Museum of Modern Art (who knew?) for a show of photographs by New York artists McDermott & McGough. (You know those two guys who pretend like it's 1900 and live their lives within the limitations of that time period.) "This exhibition is a retrospective of the entire photographic work of the American-born artists McDermott & McGough covering two decades of their highly-original output in that medium. An Experience of Amusing Chemistry: Photographs 1990 – 1890 comprises some 120 works created using a wide range of historic photographic techniques, including the use of palladium, gum, salt and cyanotype prints." Click here for the full description of the show. Closer to home, the art duo has a show up until 04.26.08 at one of my favorite galleries - Cheim & Read - called Because Of Him. "The exhibition includes several photo-realist paintings of carefully selected movie scenes in which a dramatically framed actress is central." Checkout the press release here and pics of the works here. Don't forget this in-depth Bob Nickas interview with the artists, where it comes to light that none other than Julian Schnabel helped these artworld misfits get their career off the ground by buying their early work and championing them to the artworld insiders. Maybe this guy's not as bad as I'd previously thought. 2. Remember DRV-IN? The bad news: the space rotates, so DRV-IN wasn't meant to last forever. The good news: DRV-IN is moving to a new location and won't die. No word yet on the new location, but keep checking their site. Also, they're doing something called Cars Under The Stars. "DRV-IN will partner this summer with area parking lots, car rental companies, and car manufacturers to produce a spectacular series that will bring back the drive-in: Cars Under the Stars." What a genius idea. I can't believe it took this long for someone to come up with this. The only problem: are there any empty lots left in Manhattan? I ain't going to the Bronx to pretend I'm at a drive-in! 3. Everything Must GO is the new endeavor by the folks at 139 Norfolk. "Everything Must GO will open on Saturday at 139 Norfolk Street with treasures auctioned to the highest bidder. Preview the goods at the store, Tuesday - Friday, 12 noon - 8 pm, or visit our website at www.139norfolk.com and peruse the inventory at your leisure. Then, on Saturday, come for the sport, the spectacle, a numbered paddle fetish, or just to get something unique. Every Saturday no offer will be refused." The first auction is Saturday, 04.19.08. There's a $10 registration fee. Previews begin today. Call them (646-478-7689) or checkout their site for more details and let the haggling begin. |
