Fred Perry Subculture/Supreme + Marilyn Minter/Hot Chip 1. Iconic British streetwear brand Fred Perry loves new music. "Subculture is Fred Perry's new music initiative, committed to bringing you bright young talent, alongside the classic British artists that have had a long standing relationship with the brand. Why is Fred Perry involved with music? Because it is the original sportswear to streetwear brand - adopted firstly by Mods in 1959 because 'They could wear it all night and still look good in the morning'." Featured this month: The Duke Spirit. In the Sub-Sonic section: House Of Brothers, Huw Costin, Laura Marling, Metronomy, Palladium, and Temposhark? Never heard of them, you say. Well, that's the point. Their mission is to bring new music to even the most savvy music lover. Checkout the Subculture site, which is full of free downloads, and make sure to add them on MySpace. 2. Some things don't quite make sense to me, but that doesn't mean I don't kinda get it and it definitely doesn't mean they're not hot. Case in point: New York powerhouse streetwear brand Supreme has teamed up with fashion photographer Marilyn Minter to create a series of 3 limited edition skateboards, which are available starting 04.10.08. The part that makes sense: "In the late 70's after pursuing her MFA at Syracuse University, Minter moved to NYC where she taught at a Catholic boys school and became mixed up with the NY club scene. These experiences influenced her return to the Art world and in 1989 she produced her first show, which was inspired by hardcore pornography. With harsh criticism from feminists, Minter pursued with her work binding imagery from porn videos and beauty advertisements." The part that doesn't make sense: do you think 18 year old boys will want to skate around on decks of lush lips and high heels?! Maybe this is where I'm missing the point: these aren't intended for 18 year olds or for use at all, but for a wise art collector on a budget. Like the Jeff Koons and Richard Prince decks from last year, I'm sure these will sell out in record time. I can't wait to see the fashion/PR chicks waiting in line in front of the store on the day of their release. 3. My favorite band of the hour -- Hot Chip -- are playing on 04.08.08 @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg (for the hefty ticket price of $35!) and at Terminal 5 on 04.12.08. It's a toss up: pay $25 at Terminal 5 with a potentially more annoying crowd or $10 more and trek out to Brooklyn?! Decisions, decisions. Either way, checkout the listings on OhMyRockness, another of my current favorite things. |
