APC Summer Collection/Louboutin @ FIT Museum/Holland Cocktail Lounge 1. APC's Summer 2008 collection is online. Check it out! As always, they have some killer pieces for Men + Women. Of note: the men's parkas and trench coats. After you drop $600 for a jacket and a shirt, you'll need to hit the Holland Cocktail Lounge for happy hour to make your forget how much you just spent and to ensure you don't do any more damage to your budget. (see #3 below for Holland Cocktail Lounge) 2. Whether you're a chick who drools over shoes and aspires to wear Louboutins or someone who's just into amazing design/art, drop by the Museum at FIT to checkout Sole Desire: the Shoes of Christian Louboutin. The show "explores the work of this contemporary luxury shoe designer, known for his exquisite and expensive footwear featuring eye-catching red soles. The exhibition will examine Louboutin’s inspirations, which range from gardens to bullfighters to fetish imagery, as well as investigating the explosive popularity of his shoes in today's unprecedented climate of celebrity influence." Read the full press release here, checkout the online exhibit and don't forget this piece on the NY Times website. 3. In case nobody told you, we're in a recession. Even Alan Greenspan says things are bad, which isn't a good sign. In an effort to help the average American (or at least the average New Yorker) save some cash, I'm going to do weekly pieces on how to get the biggest bang for buck. My current tip: Holland Cocktail Lounge. It's a super dive bar. Says New York Magazine: "Old livers don't die; they get pickled—if they're lucky. And many organs have met their fate at this shotgun hole-in-the-wall space. Legend has it that jazz great Dexter Gordon was a regular back when the bar was located in the Holland Welfare Hotel on 42nd Street, but these days, the only stars you'll see are those in your eyes if you foolishly engage the wrong wino in conversation." It's cramped, the lighting is bad and the crowd is Alcoholics (Not) Anonymous. Just the kind of bar New York needs more of. Oh and pints at happy hour are just $2-3, which is the reason I put this here in the first place. |
