Eastern Promises/La Haine 1. In case you missed it in the theaters, check out Eastern Promises. I won't go into too much detail, mostly because I have no desire to review movies, you'll have to trust me on this one. If you've liked what you've seen on the site and my taste thus far, you won't be disappointed. Viggo Mortensen in unbelievable and, until the credits rolled at the very end, I didn't even know it was a David Cronenberg film. It's so not his typical style, which makes it even more satisfying and impressive. Don't read too much. I didn't before I saw it and I'm glad for that. Watch the trailer, then rent it. Trust me. 2. In researching Vincent Cassell, one of the actors in Eastern Promises, I came across La Haine (Hate) a 1995 French film he was in that is one of my all-time favorites. "The film follows three young men and their time spent in the French suburban 'ghetto', over a span of twenty-four hours. Vinz, a Jew, Saïd, an Arab, and Hubert, a black boxer, have grown up in these French suburbs where high levels of diversity coupled with the racist and oppressive police force have raised tensions to a critical breaking point." Watch the trailer, read the plot summary on Wikipedia and on IMDB, and this review. Rent it here. 3. check back shortly for updates... |
