Christopher Wool + Supreme

Supreme's just launched the latest in a series of artist collaborations, this time teaming up with New York artist Christopher Wool.

"Born in Chicago, Christopher Wool relocated to New York City in the early 1970's. During that time he studied painting and worked as an artist's assistant to Joel Shapiro. In 1984, Wool had his first solo show at the legendary Cable Gallery. Working mainly in black and white, Wool works with a mixture of painterly styles."

"In 1987, Christopher Wool began his black and white stenciled word paintings. Wool carefully chose words and phrases for these pieces and the letter composition he applied set his work apart from the stencil art category."

Jun Iseyama + Fake Estate

Checkout Images Of Untrusted Divine Things -- an exhibition of new work by Jun Iseyama -- at Fake Estate.

With Images of Untrusted Divine Things, Iseyama merges her own cast of hybrid, sexualized, and child-like characters with scenes from Goya's infamous Caprichos series. Mimicking, tweaking and deconstructing the iconic scenes of 18th century Spanish social and political satire, Iseyama develops a foundation to express her own desires, anxieties and fears.

Radio Silence Release Party

By now I'm sure you've heard of the book Radio Silence by Nathan Nedorostek and Anthony Pappalardo. It's the book about the American hardcore scene that everyone's been buzzing about for several weeks now. I saw a copy of it yesterday at St Marks Books and have to agree: this one's a keeper, except I can't afford to buy $30 photo books!

"Hardcore music emerged just after the first wave of punk rock in the late 1970s. American punk kids who loved the speed and attitude of punk took hold of its spirit, got rid of the live fast, die young mind-set and made a brilliant revision: hardcore."

Cracked Actor + Palais de Tokyo

Palais de Tokyo in Paris is showing a super obscure Bowie documentary from the 70's called Cracked Actor.

"Cracked Actor is a 53-minute-long BBC television documentary film about the pop star David Bowie. It was filmed in 1974, at a time when Bowie was a popular and commercial success. He had also become addicted to drugs, including cocaine, and the documentary has become notorious for showing Bowie's fragile mental state during this period. It was made by Alan Yentob for the BBC's Omnibus documentary strand, and was first shown, on BBC2 in the UK, on January 26, 1975."

Read the full Wiki entry here. Also, checkout the film's listing on IMDB, where one comment says it's an amazing look at Bowie that you'll see nowhere else and that copies of it are hard to come by. Perhaps this showing at Palais de Tokyo will spark the BBC to release a version for wider distribution.

Hate Mail

I don't know why, but I like to post some of the hate mail I get. Thankfully, I only post a handful of negative things ever, so hate mail is few and far between.

This guy's mad that I don't like Cecily Brown's show, which is a valid point. To each his own, as the saying goes. I said if the show had been up at another gallery, I may not have reacted so strongly. Gagosian's got a pretty tight program and I didn't think her work was worthy. Cecily Brown's latest show at Gagosian is like eating Kraft Macaroni and Cheese at Per Se was my analogy.

Here's what the b todd had to say.

The Virgins Leak

An avid reader, who sent me an email regarding the David Lindwall tee contest, asked if I needed any music. I replied with a request for the new Cold War Kids Loyalty To Loyalty and the eponymous LP by The Virgins to which he kindly obliged.

You know how I won't listen to certain bands if I don't like their name?? Dumb, I know, but what can I say? Such was the case with The Virgins. Not to mention I officially banned listening to any band with a two word name, the first being "The" a few years back. Recently, though, I listened to an interview and live set by the band on KCRW's Morning Eclectic and decided it was time for me to throw my silly rules out the window and give them a real listen.

Eagles Of Death Metal fans mark your calendars.

"After unleashing Heart On to the masses, the courageous cast of characters will hit the open waters on the first headlining tour for the soaked-in-sexy new album. Look out for the album's first single Wanna Be In LA - a tale that confirms the gospel of Boots Electric and Babyduck... that selling your soul for Rock n Roll is totally worth it."

There's LOTS going on at Haunch Of Venison at the moment.

In New York, Abtract Expressionism A World Elsewhere features over 60 works by artists Lee Krasner, De Kooning, Gorky, Rothko, Franz Kline, and Clifford Still.

"The exhibition is organized and curated by David Anfam, the eminent London-based art historian, critic and expert on modern American art. Chanel + Zaha Hadid = Mobile Art

Rockstar architect Zaha Hadid is coming to New York. Central Park to be exact. The Iraqi-born, London-based architect has teamed up with Chanel for a project called Mobile Art.

"A rectangular patch of sand in Central Park may be the last place you’d expect to find a gleaming Star Trek-style spacecraft. But an art pavilion that resembles just that will make a temporary landing there this fall. Called Mobile Art, the structure itself was designed by the renowned London architect Zaha Hadid and will occupy the Rumsey Playfield, midpark at 70th Street, from Oct. 20 to Nov. 9. (It is Ms. Hadid's first New York building, albeit temporary, and has already made stops in Hong Kong and Tokyo and is headed later for London, Moscow, and Paris."

Maison Martin Margiela + I.T

Hong Kong mega retailer I.T has some big news.

It's opening a free standing Margiela store in Hong Kong on the Kowloon side -- the second MMM store in the capital of mega consumption. You'll remember I.T's MMM exhibit in June that kicked off the opening of their super hip Beijing 798 space. Like the rest of the world, they just can't get enough Margiela.

"It's been a long wait. For a long while the fashion connisseurs have had to go to one of the very few fashion shrines on On Lan Street for their fashion feast. Finally, cult followers have somewhere to head to on the Kowloon side. Maison Martin Margiela is soon setting its store at Harbour City, and in celebration to that, on the opening day, there will be a cocktail reception."

Pinche Taqueria & The Mercury Dime

When I'm strapped for time and don't feel like locking up my bike to run in and get lunch, I go to Bite's bite-sized sandwich stand, where I saddle up to the window and order without ever leaving my bike. If you don't know Bite (335 Lafayette Street just below Bleecker), check it out.

As I approached yesterday, I noticed something was off. Something new had opened, so I went to investigate.

A new outpost of one of my favorite taco stands from NoLita -- Pinche Taqueria -- has opened. That's the place I covered in the Spring that has the best fish tacos ever, and I don't usually like fish tacos. The space is amazing, the location much more convenient than the Mott Street spot, and the prices are oh so right. Check it out.

TVOTR's Dear Science, Real Leak

Normally, I wouldn't do this, but one thing I learned from last week's financial meltdown is that the rich, like the poor, do whatever the f*$k they want while all us middle class suckers do our best to follow rules, laws, what have you.

No more!! I say it's time for a little wild wild west action. Why should I try to do the right thing? Where has it gotten me? I have very little faith left in the government and all its rules and regulations.

Someone sent me a link to a zip file with all the tracks from TV On The Radio's latest LP Dear Science,. It's really good and I want you to be able to download it for free. I'm sure after last week, you can't really afford it now anyway, right?? If the bankers aren't being sent to jail for stealing billions from us, then I feel prettys safe that I won't go to jail for this.

Enjoy!!!

You can also buy it, you middle class rule following sucker!!

Cecily Brown's Pure Rubbish @ Gagosian

As anyone who reads this.hearts.on.fire. regularly knows, it's rare for me to write a negative entry. My goal with this site is to spread the word on things I love and not those I hate. The blogosphere is chock full of haters and cynics and I generally don't want to add to that. Every now and then, though, I just can't hold back.

After stopping by the gorgeous new 303 Gallery space on 21st Street on Saturday for the Doug Aitken show, Anna and I went to see the mega Cecily Brown show at Gagosian's 24th Street space.

Two words: pure rubbish.

Firstly, I had no clue she'd gotten as big as she seems to be. Given her earlier work, I knew she had promise, but a full gallery show at Gagosian on 24th is a big deal. Almost too big of a deal for Ms. Brown, as it looked like she had a moment a few months back when she realized how much wall space there is and said to herself "Shit! I need 25 more paintings fast!"

Doug Aitken @ 303

Doug Aitken is a rockstar artist.

His latest exhibit -- Migration -- that just opened concurrently at the new 303 Gallery space on 21st Street and their space on 22nd Street is hot hot hot. I have to admit, I only stopped into the 21st Street space. The 3 piece video work on display were at times stark, yet mesmerizing. Simple, yet monumental.

"For the inaugural exhibition in 303 Gallery's 21st street space, Aitken presents Migration, the first in a 3-part cycle of installations titled Empire. In Migration the movements of wild North American migratory animals are transposed upon the ubiquitous space of modern roadside hotels and motels.

TOVTR's Dear Science, On MySpace

"Gothic is an epithet that evokes images of death, destruction, and decay. Not simply a word that describes something, such as a Gothic cathedral, it is almost always a term of abuse that implies the dark, barbarous, and gloomy."

"From its origins in 18th century gothic literature of terror to its contemporary manifestations in vampire literature and cinema, the gothic has embraced the powers of horror and the erotic macabre. Throughout its history, fashion has been central to our vision of the gothic."

Kounter Kulture

London's got a hot new art fair coming to town this October called Kounter Kulture. Like every other town and all other art fairs, things tend to get a little boring with the status quo. The big guns muscle their way into position and nothing changes much year in and year out. Move over Frieze, there's a new kid in town and he's ready to stir things up.

Stuart Semple + Diesel: Love-in-idleness

I've known for a while now that Stuart Semple was working on a project with Diesel and Selfridges. He wrote to tell me that he got a load of denim delivered recently and was painting on it for an installation to be done at the London store next month.

What I'd pictured in my head was something akin to the Damien Hirst x Levis x Warhol demin collaboration. While I think painting on jeans is great and all -- albeit way played out -- I was excited for him and knew he'd do something new and fresh.

What I didn't realize is that he was painting ON demin, not painting on jeans. Instead of stretching raw canvas, he's stretched raw Deisel denim and painted on it as such.

One things for certain: Prada throws one hell of a Fashion Week party.

That having been said, Prada also knows how to make a super slick promotional video for it's Fall 2008 collection. They've teamed up with Antony & The Johnsons to create a music video -- Fallen Shadows -- that shows off their latest collection.

I've got to say, I like the idea and teaming of a fashion line with an indie singer in an artsy way to promote a collection, but I don't think the Second Life style video and models really do much for the collection. How's about some real people? Models, anyone?

5 Stores For Plaid Shirts

You may have noticed: plaid is hot.

Sure it's been simmering for the past year or so, but this Fall it's going to break big time for guys in the form of vintage, long sleeve, button up shirts in cotton and wool. Unlike plaid in the 90's, which was dreary and depressing, this time around it's the simple patterns that pack a punch that you'll want to get your hands on.

My favorites: the medium thick cotton versions made for a chilly day. The best ones I've seen can be found at Stock, which I told you about last spring.

The owner has been Ralph Lauren's vintage buyer for the past 8 years and has an eye that I haven't seen replicated elsewhere. Priced around $125/shirt, they don't come cheap, but if you can swing it, the patterns and colors are well worth it."

Speaking of Patti Smith, I somehow missed a cd she came out with a few months back called Coral Sea.

Patti Smith + Costume National + Dream of Life

If you've never seen Patti Smith perform live, you're missing out big time. She's hands down one of the best live performers I've ever seen. When she sings People Have The Power, it gives me goosebumps. She's so real, especially in today's world of hyperbranding and faux everything, it's humbling and exciting.

Seeing her NYE performances is an amazing way to spend a night. Given she plays Bowery Ballroom, it's a pretty intimate show, although not quite as intimate as her performance last night at the new Costume National store in SOHO.

In honor of the store opening and to celebrate the success Dream Of Life, the Steven Sebring biopic on the iconic singer, Smith played a 4 song set to close Fashion Week for a small audience of press, celebrities, and other insiders.

The works in the exhibition have been selected in situ by Jeff Koons, highlighting an inner relationship between each art work and the theme of the room, or the specific features of the work and the decorative details and the furnishings of the location, such as the original ancient furniture, the stucco elements, and the paintings on the walls and ceilings."

Seventeen pieces!! Rabbit (1986) looks unbelievable inside an ornate room. It looks as if the piece was made for Versailles.

DR. GO HOME (BABYTARANTULA IS BACK IN GODZILLA-GYM, thanks 1923-2023)

Fans of German artist Johnathan Meese keep this Friday evening free. It's the opening of his latest show at The Journal Gallery in Williamsburg.

"The Journal Gallery is proud to present DR. GO HOME (BABYTARANTULA IS BACK IN GODZILLA-GYM, thanks 1923-2023), a collection of work by German artist Jonathan Meese, who previously contributed the cover image, a performance piece on DVD and 28 pages of works on paper for the journal entry 22."

TV on the Radio's Dear Science,

Word on the street: TV on the Radio's new LP Dear Science, is amazing. It's not scheduled to drop until 09.23.08, but we all know that leaks are now de rigeur in the music industry.

In case you missed it in the NY Times this past Sunday: "TV on the Radio follows its widely praised 2006 album, Return to Cookie Mountain, with a magnificent third album, Dear Science, (the comma is part of the title). The songs are vertiginous, full of cantilevered rhythms and synthetic sounds, yet openly catchy. Mr. Adebimpe and Kyp Malone sing about war and technology, environmental damage and racism while also invoking pleasure and hope."

Gilbert & George @ Brooklyn Museum

Mark your calendars!! The Gilbert & George retrospective organized by the Tate Modern is making a stop at the Brooklyn Museum. The show opens 10.03.08 and runs through 01.11.09. I'm not sure about you, but I'm a huge fan and don't think I've ever seen one of their works in person, so this is major.

"The Brooklyn Museum is the final venue of an international tour of the first retrospective in more than twenty years of work by the internationally acclaimed artists Gilbert & George. The exhibition comprises more than eighty pictures created since 1970, among them more than a dozen that are only in the Brooklyn presentation. The exhibition traces their stylistic and emotional evolution through their pictures and art in other media, ranging from charcoal on paper sculpture from the early 1970s to postcard pieces to ephemera dating back to the 1960s."

Topshop US Launches Today

Americans rejoice!

As of today, you can now shop online at Topshop US.

The SOHO store, which was originally supposed to open during Fashion Week (aka now!), is now rumored to be opening mid October, although rumors question that date.

Says Racked: "So we were very interested to hear a rumor from a reputable source stating that the UK store's planned October 10th opening will be practically impossible to hit. Word is that the interior, now hidden behind a massive plywood wall, is just a big hole, and one architecture firm has already ditched the project because what Topshop's asking is completely unrealistic."

3 Things: Colette x Gap, Cold War Kids, + Lucy McKenzie

1. By now everyone knows about the GapxColette pop-up store in Midtown (5th Ave + 54th St) that opened this past Saturday and will remain open until 10.05.08. For those of you who weren't at the party or can't stop by, the merchandise is now online for all the world to see. I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised with the items they're carrying.

2. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of Cold War Kids new LP Loyalty To Loyalty, which will hit the shelves on 09.23.08. In the interim, the band has posted the first single Something Is Not Right With Me on their MySpace for you to checkout.

3. Irish artist Lucy MacKenzie has a show -- Projects 88: Lucy McKenzie -- opening this week at MoMA. "Combining painting, printmaking, and drawing with public events such as concerts, poetry readings, and performances, Lucy McKenzie (b. 1977, Glasgow) goes far beyond the production of objects in her artistic practice."

Naked And Famous Denim

My new intern tipped me off to a hot line of affordable premium denim out of Canada called Naked And Famous.

In my opinion, the denim market is beyond oversaturated, which is why I stopped paying attention a year ago. For anyone who's interested, my current pick: Levi's 514 in black with a price tag of around $50 depending on where you get them!!!

Naked And Famous, though, with most of their styles priced below $140USD have drawn my attention back to the denim market.

"Naked & Famous Denim uses only the most unique and rare denim fabrics from Japan. The prestigious mill in Japan, from which we import all our fabric, is committed to producing only the best denim in the world.

Rag And Bone Shop

The Marc Jacobs wearing Magnolia Bakery cupcake eating shoppers from Bleecker Street now have a reason to turn right onto Christopher Street as they zigzag their way across town: highend retail has landed.

Hipster clothiers Rag And Bone have opened their first New York shop in what used to be a gay coffee house on Christopher Street's main drag -- the block between Bleecker and Hudson, which is still full of leather and sex shops and gay bars, giving it some edge that you won't find around the corner on Marc Jacobs Row.

3 Films: Broken English, A Woman Under The Influence, + La Vie En Rose

1. It's the kind of indie that I like: a kinda raw, semi-believable movie that on some level I can relate to. While Broken English is sort of a chick flick, I must admit, it's something anyone who's single living in a big city (New York in particular) can relate to on some level.

2. Next up, A Woman Under The Influence. It's the first ever movie I've seen by one of the pioneers of American indie films John Cassavetes. It stars Cassavetes wife/widow legendary actress Gena Rowlands, who delivers an Oscar-nominated performance.

3. Last but not least, I finally got around to watching La Vie En Rose -- the Edith Piaf story -- that won Marion Cotillard the Oscar for Best Actress this past year. I don't remember against whom she was competing, but the Oscar is well-deserved and Piaf's life story is incredible.

3 Things: Pleasure Principle, A-ron + ASS, + The Decemberists

1. After much waiting, Pleasure Principles A/W 08 line has been posted up on Seven's site. I love their tees: the fit, the cut, and the color/print combos are pretty amazing. I have to say, though, this new collection of tees is a bit of a disappointment.

2. LES super secret art space/gallery ASS has teamed up with ARON (formerly of A-LIFE) for My Life In T-Shirts, The Autobiography of Aaron Banderoff. It opens this Saturday, but as always, if you don't know, I can't tell.

3. Remember The Decemberists? They're playing at Terminal 5 on 11.05.08. Get tickets now. Their live performances are amazing.

New Era Gift Card

Since it was such a hit last time around, which came as a total surprise to me I must admit, I've gotten my hands on another New Era gift card to give away this week.

I'm sure you know about New Era by now. They have the hottest hats around and a flagship store (9 East 4th St) in NoHo. And let's not forget the other flagship stores in: Atlanta, Toronto, London, and, of course, Buffalo.

Fake + MUSAC

One of my favorite magazines -- Fake -- has teamed up with one of my new favorite museums -- MUSAC -- to develop a project for its Showcases series entitled FAKE. PIECE OF ART/pis of art/.

"MUSAC has invited Fake to develop a project for its Showcases. The initiative, produced by the Museum itself, will essentially revolve around a special issue devoted to today's art, for which guest editor Tolo Cañellas has selected a number of works by contemporary artists, asking some of them to carry out specific interventions on the publication."

Chris Johanson + Deitch

San Francisco artist Chris Johanson and Deitch have teamed up for an exhibit of his work called TOTALITIES. It runs from 09.04 through 10.18.08.

"Johanson was born in suburban San Jose, California in 1968. He has no formal training in art, learning some technique by painting skateboards and houses. He moved to San Francisco, California's Mission District in 1989, where he became a member of the local art community, initially drawing cartoons on lampposts and bathroom walls using black Sharpies." Martin Creed + The Tate Britain

If you're in London, stop by the Tate Britian for the latest work by 2001 Turner Prize winner Martin Creed.

Creed, you'll remember, is the guy who won the prize with his controversial work The Lights Going On and Off, which was an empty room with the lights going on and off!

This time around, Creed presents us with Work No. 850, which "centres on a simple idea: that a person will run as fast as they can every thirty seconds through the gallery. Each run is followed by an equivalent pause, like a musical rest, during which the grand Neoclassical gallery is empty."
