I never thought I'd utter the name Tretorn again. Ever. But since preppy is the new punk, here it goes.

Immortalized in the Preppy Handbook, the iconic Swedish company's canvas sneakers were 'must-have' sneakers for all good preppies. And now they're back.

Gullwing is now the name of the product line, which is obvious when you look at their logo on the side of the sneaker.

The classic styles are hot once again, but checkout these two (2) new styles:

Paninari. Named for "a youth trend that raged in Italy during the 1980s, sprung out of a love for American culture."

Turnera (pictured right), which comes in leather and suede and is much more understated and cool. The black on black style is particularly hot.

All styles can be found here. Get 'em while they're hot.

One of my current favorite singers, Sufjan Stevens, (who names various legs of his tours stuff like Liz Janes, Castanets, and Bunky) has sold out three (3) nights of the My Brightest Diamond leg at Town Hall in New York. Thanks to eBay, you can still get scalped tickets. No more standing outside trying to figure out which sketchy guy to buy tickets from.

Secret Machines are playing Irving Plaza Monday (sold out) and Tuesday 10.02/03. Checkout their MySpace page for more tour dates elsewhere in the country. This show is a must see. Their summer performance opening for Bloc Party at McCarren Pool was unbelievable. You can get tickets for Tuesday here and again eBay has some for Monday.

A new album The Crane Wife by The Decemberists is due out 10.06. They'll pass through New York on 11.03 at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Tickets are still available. Checkout the full list of dates here.

Finally, I can't shake the song Kim Jones used in his Spring/Summer 2007 show called Miss Broadway by 70's band Belle Epoque. I can't even find a video for it on YouTube. Since the members of the band are all probably in rehab or can't afford computers, I'm going to post the MP3 here for you to download.

Could there be a connection between pong and the art world???

There's a new documentary (about art and video games) coming out called 8 BIT that makes the connection. The film "brings a global perspective on the new artistic approaches of the DIY generation which grew up playing Atari and Commodore 64."

It features interviews and the work of Carlo Zanni, TEAMTENDO, Akiko Sakaizumi, Cory Arcangel, and Bodenstandig 2000, to name a few.

You can checkout the trailer here and the press release here.

MOMA will screen the film 10.07 and 10.11. Check here for more info.

Also, checkout Rhizome.org (the gallery that connects technology and art), that is now affiliated with the New Museum, whose new digs will be open next year downtown on Bowery.

Another cool site--Bit Editions--features the work of a handful of digital artists, including Canadian-born artist Jillian McDonald, creator of the super cool digital film Me and Billybob, addressing her obsession with actor Billy Bob Thorton, in which she spliced herself into famous movie scenes featuring the actor.

Checkout these new or updated websites!

Colette has revised their site. I have to say, it's really hot. There's an eShop, newsletter, Colette Tv, and a link to a magazine featuring the sites mascots Cap & Pep.

Also new online: Le Shop out of Stockholm has just completed their online eShop. Lots of cool stuff from Travota, Ju$t Another Rich Kid, Surface to Air, Nice Collective, among others. Give a look.

Another hot Swedish shop Cottonmouth has their Tres Bien Shop online now too. They too carry Ju$t Another Rich Kid and Surface to Air, as well as Duffer of St George, Umbro by Kim Jones, WoodWood, Henrik Vibskov, and a whole range of other rad lines.

Finally, my favorite (relatively) new site: XTube. It's free online porn, which doesn't require much of an explanation.

With all the money you save on porn, you can shop online for some cool tees and such.

Air to the max.

Everybody knows that I love Nikes. My current favorites are the Air Force 180 in every color combination. I can't get enough of them. And let's not forget the recently-released Nike/Joy Division sneakers. They're unbelievable.

There are so many hot new styles of Nikes out right now, it's seriously hard to keep up.

New York shoe mecca Alife Rivington Club is helping us keep up.

This Saturday (09.30.06) at 9am for 360 minutes, it's "ONE TIME ONLY" AIR MAX COLLECTION: 16 iterations of historical Air Max product all interpreted on Air Max 360 bottoms and brought together by Mark Parker, Richard Clarke and Jesse Leyva.

Checkout this piece on the project on High Snobiety.

The store is located at 158 Rivington Street on the LES.

Former designer for Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, Detroit-born designer John Varvatos broke out on his own in 2000.

Since then, he's launched his own fragrance, and an eyewear collection this year.

In addition to his own line, he has been collaborating with Converse for three (3) years now. He's designed several rad pair of low top Chuck Taylors for them and even a pair of high tops. This year has full men's and women's collections with them, featuring a hot new ad campaign, which has just launched.

Currently in his own ads, he uses the iconic Iggy Pop and has used Soundgarden's Chris Cornell in past ads.

Check this article on Time Out New York online and this one in the Cool Hunter section of Britain's Sunday Times online.

A great video of his Spring/Summer 07 collection and interview of the designer can be found here on Zoozoom.

For a complete listing of stores, checkout his site. It's chock full of info on him and all his work.

I still haven't seen it but have been dying to since I saw the trailer this summer: The Science of Sleep, Michel Gondry's new movie starring Gael Garcia Bernal.

If you haven't seen the trailer yet, check it out here. There's also a New York Times review here.

Deitch has a show up now featuring "an exhibition of sculpture and pathological creepy little gifts" by Michel and sets from the film at the 76 Grand Street location. Check it out before it's over on 09.30.06.

Other notable works by Gondry: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Block Party, Bjork: Volumen, and a kind of greatest hits of his work in music video, short films, and commericials that's totally worthwhile for the music videos alone called The Work of Director Michel Gondry. My favorites: The Hardest Button To Button and Fell In Love With A Girl, which was done all in Legos.

And if you're anything like me, you constantly think Gondry did Being John Malkovich. He did not. That one was by Spike Jonze, but it was written by the same guy--Charles Kaufman--who wrote Eternal Sunshine, which makes it so confusing.

Sure, we all love David Bowie for his music. That's a no brainer. It's his acting that deserves a little attention.

First and foremost, The Hunger, the cult vampire movie starring Mr. Bowie along with Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. This one is a must see: set in early 80's New York, Miriam (Deneuve), a centuries-old vampire, preys on urban clubgoers with her vampire lover John (Bowie).

Next is The Man Who Fell To Earth. In it, Bowie plays a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to get water for his dying planet. Again, it's a classic, must-see for any Bowie fan. The image of him in his hotel room with 30 plus televisions piled on top of each other is arresting, if not a big prophetic.

Then there's Basquiat, Julian Schnabel's movie about the life and death of famed New York painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, in which Bowie plays a dead ringer Andy Warhol. Killer movie, but worth it just to see Bowie's performance.

Finally, he makes a cameo in the uber dark movie Christian F, a film that portrays the drug scene in Berlin in the 70s, following tape recordings of Christiane F., a 14 year old girl who gets caught up in heroin and prostitution. Bowie also provides the music for the movie, notably the German version of "Heroes".

You can also checkout his IMDB page for a complete list of everything he's been in. It's surprisingly extensive.

My favorite London painter: Stuart Semple.

Checkout his work here. His most current series of paintings are pretty amazing.

With names like Bomb Track, It's Too Late Babe, I Want Candy, and You Skin Makes Me Cry, his work draws heavily from music and pop culture, which he mixes with he his own visions on tableaus of vivid, in-your-face color.

He currently has paintings in the Liverpool Biennial and will have more in the Sao Paulo Biennial next month.

At the moment, he's got his hand in several different projects, like his recent role as art director of the first issue of super-slick, online mag Don't.

He's also just teamed up with London's coolest club All You Can Eat (a party thrown by WarBoy and K-Tron) to make a brand new internet TV station. Expect music videos, art documentaries and snapshots of London Street fashions.

Finally, Stuart and Ju$t Another Rich Kid will collaborate on a project tentatively called Sweet Shop, which will be presented in collaboration with a gallery here in New York. More on that as it progresses.

All hail Mr. Jones. Kim Jones, to be exact.

The photosfrom his Spring/Summer 2007 collection are up on his site now and worth checking out. There's also a video of the show.

The collection is hot. Checkout a review by Style.com here. "Jones collaborates on part of his collection with tailor Timothy Everest, and here that yielded pieces like a seersucker shirt-jacket."

The first half of the show (video) features a killer remake of Miss Broadway, a tripped-out disco song from 70's band La Belle Epoque. It's now my new new favorite song. I can't stop listening to it.

In addition to his signature collection, like Yohji, he also does a collaborative collection for Umbro aptly called Umbro by Kim Jones.

Henry Rollins rocks.

You can see lots of him in the new documentary American Hardcore, which was made from a book published in 2001 by Steven Blush. Checkout the New York Times review and the trailer on IMDB.

The focus is on Southern California hardcore scene, which makes it interesting, given most other movies on punk rock focus on the more well-known British and New York scenes.

Included in the movie are interviews with with members of Minor Threat, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, DOA, and random other bands and regulars on the scene.

Other worthwhile music documentaries to checkout: Punk: Attitude, Dead Kennedys: The Early Years, The Clash: Westway to the World, Ozzy Osbourne: Don't Blame Me and Biggie & Tupac.

I recommend the last one despite my total disdain for its maker, the loathsome Nick Broomfield.

Speaking of loathsome, checkout this video letter from Henry Rollins to Ann Coulter. It's genius.

I have a favorite new song: Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John.

I heard it during the Marc by Marc Jacobs and Chaiken shows last week, and thought for sure it had to be someone like Nouvelle Vague or some Japanese band I've not heard of.

I just found out differently going through the Just Release/Overheard at Fashion Week section on Agenda's website, where they list the song lists for various fashion week shows, in case you were wondering what Michael Kors or Zac Posen were playing at their shows.

It's super chill and the video on YouTube is so hot. Vocals are provided by Victoria Bergsman formerly of The Concretes.

Checkout more of their songs on MySpace. I haven't listened to anything else and am not sure I will. I have to play this song 200 or 300 times first.

Collaborations have become a staple of the creative world.

Fashion and art: like Thom Browne's movie presentation this past fasion week done by Brooklyn-based artist Anthony Goicolea. Mainstream fashion and indie fashion: Umbro and Kim Jones. Sportswear and couture: Adidas and Yohji Yamamoto.

Every once in a while along comes a big corporate behemoth who collaborates with a fringe artist or designer, like the just-released collaboration between Stockholm designers Nakkna and Absolut Vodka.

Nakkna created limited edition high ball and shot glasses for the brand, which was launched last week at Stockholm hot spot Spy Bar. As austere as the clothes they design, the glasses come in only black and white with a slick graphic etched into the glass, that if looked at closely enough, reveals hints of the Absolut bottle shape.

This is the fifth glass collection the vodka brand has produced in conllaboration with artists and designers. Previous collections have been designed by Patrik Söderstam, Kim Jones, art magazine Loyal and most recently fashion designer and illustrator Lovisa Burfitt.

I'll drink to that.

Japanese artist Item Idem's latest piece combines his talents and the windows of uber chic Tokyo store Loveless for the launch of the renewal issue of Tokion in Japan.

The piece is entitled "The Wrong Office: Loveless Lifemore?"

Following Chris Burden's earliest retainment & isolation performances from the 70's, & reactivating his own illustrious conceptual simulation & relocation program of artistic, retail, & social structures, Item Idem will install, interpret, & relocate the structural appearance & functional mode of an austere office working environment inside the glass box window of one the highest representative symbols of worlwide fashion retail culture.

Item Idem will be in the store window/office 7 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a temperature reaching 40 Celsius degrees, enduring the constant curious, intrigued, & intrusive visitors' gaze.

Simply armed with a fan, a coffee machine, & a dart game, Item Idem, will work & collaborate with his coworkers, reply to emails, conduct live meetings, publish daily briefs about Tokion, and finally offer his person to any question, request, solicitation coming from his own work/network environment, but also from unexpected visitors.

It runs now through 09.23.06. Don't miss it. And make sure to go into Loveless while there. It's reportedly the hottest shop in Tokyo at the moment, if not the world.

Art-chart by Stuart Semple.

This week's movers and shakers in the art world.

1. Banksy (new entry) - It's impossible for me to ignore the fact that he caused more media hype around the Paris Hilton record launch than she did. I love it when invisible artists take major political problems or cultural icons and 'chuck bricks at them'. It's the least cliched way to get a whole load of press. And who said that art can't change the world?
2. The Gagosian gallery (no move) - Now representing the Giacometti Foundation. Who wants to bet even GoGo did a little ape dance round his office when he got that news.
3. Jeff Koons (down 2 places) - for doing the voice over for a documentary film about Warhol. Jeff you really DON'T have to get your Andy out!
4. Indian Contemporary Art (new entry) - Well if you'd have snapped it up a year or so ago, you'd have made yourself a 50% profit. It's a force to be reckoned with.
5. Tracey Emin (down 3 places) - Rather dull this time round. No reported fights, throttling, or bad behavior. Just the rather establishment pleasing news that she will represent Britain in the Venice Biennale.
6. The Tate (up two places) - for having the vision to dedicate it's largest ever exhibition to the almighty Gilbert and George, hoorah for Sir Nick spending the million on that glass and chrome extension. More G&G for your money has to be a good thing! Although looks like we're going to have to wait till February.
7. Damien Hirst (no move) - Take a beautiful British country house like Chatsworth, and a massive 8 foot bronze of the Christian martyr St Bartholomew and then terrify the kiddies by showing him with his skin ripped off, insides exposed and the indicative pair of scissors in his hands.
8. Charles Thomson (new entry) - He did what everyone left bitter after a relationship ends dreams of doing. He dedicated a whole exhibition to his beautiful and talented ex girlfriend, fellow artist Stella Vine. The only snag was he painted her completely naked.
9. Patti Smith (new entry) - For tearing up London Last week with her Tate performance and her bizarre Mapplethorpe collaborative film 'Still Moving' at Alison Jacques gallery. But she makes it on the list for making the Times art critic choke on his warm white wine. LEGEND
10. Bischoff Weiss gallery (new entry) - Because I was there last night and she was especially lovely to me. Plus she actually has a really really fascinating exhibition on: www.bischoffweiss.com.

Got suggestions for movers and shakers? Got a hot tip email: artchart@stuartsemple.com

If you've read Please Kill Me or know anything about the 70's New York punk scene, you've heard of Television.

The first band ever to perform at the soon-to-be-defunct CBGB's, Television is cited by many as one of the most influential bands from that period, despite relatively little commerical success. The music is hypnotic.

When their debut album, Marquee Moon, was released one critic said, ""forget everything you've heard about Television, forget punk, forget New York, forget CBGB's...hell, forget rock and roll--this is the real item."

If you're not familiar with the New York punk scene, you'll be surprised at the sound of these guys. Unlike British punk like the Sex Pistols and bands like the Dead Kennedys or Black Flag, the New York punk sound is totally different and Television unique even among its peers. "There was a complexity in their musical textures that went against the grain of punk at the time."

Everything from Marquee Moon rocks. My favorite is Little Johnny Jewel. Other notables: Marquee Moon, Elevation, & Venus.

The very first all Y-3 store has just opened in Tokyo.

The popular brand--a collaboration between master designer Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas-- is now it its 7th year and going strong. It features streamlined sportswear (footwear, accessories, and clothing) for the fashion forward set.

Checkout the latest on their site. The designs look better than ever.

In addition to the new shop, the line can be found in other major department stores and high-end boutiques worldwide, including Isetan & Eliminator (Tokyo), Blackjack (Bangkok), Shine (Beijing), Colette (Paris), Eleven (Valencia), Harvey Nichols (UK and Turkey), and Jeffrey, Odin & Memes (New York), to name a few.

Take a few minutes to check out Yohji's site. Make sure to find the videos from the Paris Fall/Winter 2006 shows: there's Tom Waits playing in the background, a sick venue, and collections you won't forget.

3... Buzzfly 3 / "Unique, honest direct and totally fresh" by and far apply to Ben Watt and his acclaimed series Buzzin Fly.
4... Bliss (They Made History) Chillout act Bliss return with a gorgeous mix of electronic and classical music, blissful, ethereal, and vocal free.
5... Omar- (Sing-If You Want It) / Omar serves up a blend of smooth and funky minimalist soul on his fifth album.
6... Little People (Mickey Mouse Operation) Laurent Clerc is Little People, and on his debut CD beats and breaks exist nicely with more haunting and cinematic sounds, such as birds (!) and noises akin to those from outer space.
7... Lenine / With his innate sense of traditional and beats, incorporating a nice mix of samba onto rock, pop, and funk, Lenine, is quite simply, the future of Brazilian pop music.
8... Quintetto Lo Greco-Snap Count / Jazz sets don't get more spot-on than this. The Lo Greco brothers have taken Modern jazz to its finest levels.
9... India.Aire (Testimony Vol 1: Life & Relationship) Of all the nu-soul divas out there, India.Aire may be the most sincere with her focus squarely on the music allowing the listener to experience this gently funky and warmly melodic intelligent soul singer.
10.. Solidaze (Pleasure From Precision) Solidaze can be categorized as lounge music, but it really can best be described as a down-tempo set of hypnotic electro-soul fused with elements of house and nu jazz.

Italian artist Carlo Zanni has released an amazing new piece of work that you have to check out.

The Possible Ties Between Illness and Success, a short movie transformed by an Internet data flux and re-edited server-side when web statistics (Google Analytics) are available. The core idea of the video is the relationship between manic-depressive illness forms and success at large. The more people watching the video at one time, the more ill the man becomes.

Click here to download the video. Hold tight, it takes about 5 minutes to download on a highspeed connection.

Like other works by Zanni, it involves the use of dynamic data culled from the web. The music is by well-known composer Gabriel Yared (Cold Mountain and The English Patient), who also lent a hand in Zanni's 2004 videogame piece The Average Shoveler--commissioned by Rhizome.org--that included outfits by Indigo People designer Siri Kuptamethee, which is just plain hot.

Just out and oh so small. No, I'm not writing about Britney Spears' baby, which I'm sure is far from small anyway.

It's the new iPod shuffle. 1.62 inches long, about half an ounce in weight, and holds up to 240 songs. It has a "Forward" and "Back" button to allow you to skip something that may come up that you don't want to hear.

The downside is that you can't do playlists or listen selectively as with the Nano and there's no screen, but for $79 and the ability to clip it onto the watch pocket of your jeans, this is a no brainer.

If you can wait till October (which is the estimated ship date), order it from the Apple site with FREE shipping and laser engraving.

Super hot British designer Oliver Spencer is opening his first retail location with the aid of Eddie Chai & Paul Birardi, owners of New York hot spot Odin.

Checkout the piece about it online at Apparel Resources.

Currently, the designer to the stars (Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher, Daniel Day Lewis, The Bravery, and Paul Weller, to name a few) is only sold in others stores in the UK, the US, and Japan. This will be his first foray into the retail trade, with plans to open this month in the West Village. The exact address is not yet known.

Future plans include opening another retail shop in Japan in the near future.

This one seems like a win/win, given the success of Odin and popularity of the Oliver Spencer line. More info to come as it's released.

Sufjan Stevens.

I've seen the name a lot the past few years, but for some reason I've never heard his music or really given him any serious thought. Something sparked me to download some of his songs the other night, and now I'm hooked.

Some of the songs are very folksy, like Elliot Smith meets James Taylor or Cat Stevens, maybe. Others are very pop, but not in the way you'd expect. Very cheery, lots of musical instruments, clapping, background singers.

He's currently working on a project that involves making an album for each of the 50 states. Illinois and Michigan have been completed thus far.

The critical acclaim for Illinois was so great--it ranked as the #1 album for 2005 on Metacritic--that Stevens has taken 21 recordings from the Illinois recording sessions and put them together into the just-released album called Avalanche.

Checkout: Say Yes! To Michigan, Come On Feel The Illinoise! (my current favorite), Chicago, To Be Alone With You, Casimir Pulaski Day, For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti, and The Dress Looks Nice On You.

I have to break my self-imposed "no graffiti" rule AGAIN. This time for Kaws.

With signature X's for eyes on his iconographic skullhead figure, Kaws is known for making his mark on posters in bus stops around New York. Checkout this piece on him that sums it up perfectly.

Not only has he stood the test of time, but he's only gotten more and more popular over the years.

He's the resident artist at the newly opened Tokyo shop Original Fake, where he's teamed up with Medicom Toys to make limited edition bronze, plastic, and wood limited-edition toys for the shop. T-shirts and cashmere sweaters are also available in addition to the toys.

For those of you who can't make it to Tokyo, We Sold Out (the online shop that's a collaboration between Colette and LA MJC) has just added select pieces from Original Fake to their site.

My Top 10 by Michael Anderer of Matthew Izzo

1... oh! you pretty things (david bowie) hunky dory
Probably the most influential album of my life, I first heard this album in catholic high school when I was struggling with a lot, it totally helped me to deal everything that I was feeling sexually and spiritually. This song always stuck out as my favorite track on the album... I recently started to include it in my DJ sets to find out it is as powerful to me today as it was back then. Thank You Mr. Bowie :)
2... i dont wanna fall in love (she wants revenge)
I totally lived this song, and its as catchy and good as any post punk dance song that could be here
3... god's gonna cut you down (johnny cash)
johnny's rendition of the traditional song keeps me grounded, when it all comes down to it, cash knows what I need... been the closing song of everyone of my dj sets since i heard it.

Sweden in the house.

Starting in late September, it's us versus them at New York's Opening Ceremony, whose store concept is to pit US designers against a foreign country's designers for two seasons.

Tops in the shop: Nakkna. The uber cool indie label from Stockholm will be joined by Hope, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, Rodebjer, Carin Wester, Pour, Velour, Whyred.

According to New York Magazine, the ownders of Opening Ceremony "go to a new country and stay for a while to hang out and get the vibe. Then, they shop. Before leaving, the duo typically buys two seasons’ worth of collections from about ten designers, making sure to pick one power player and the rest relative unknowns."

Check it out.

The Secret Machines rule. And they're on tour.

After their mind blowing performance at McCarren Pool with Bloc Party this summer, I'm definitely going to go see this show.

In New York, they're at Irving Plaza on 10.02 and at Warsaw in Brooklyn on 11.03. Go to their MySpace page for a full listing of tour dates.

Checkout their video on YouTube for my new favorite Secret Machines song "Better Bring Your Friends".

It's really infectious. I can't stop listening to it.

Although I totally love Warhol, I made a secret vow not to cover him on here as the topic is as played out as graffiti and skateboarding.

Some vows were meant to be broken.

I'm still fascinated at how this awkward, not very cool or attractive guy became the end all be all for the rich, for artists, and for everyone in between. That's what I love about New York.

Given that he was known for not saying much, films in which he speaks and is in front of not behind the camera are of particular interest to me, revealing the man who was one of the first people savvy enough to know that keeping his mouth shut to cover up his lack of cool would work to his benefit, making the viewers create what they wanted him to be.

Film Forum is running a 4 hour documentary by Ric Burns. Checkout the listing on Film Forum's site. Tickets are FREE, as our friends at Goldman Sachs are underwriting the costs.

While you're at it, download David Bowie's song Andy Warhol on Limewire and the remake by The Stone Temple Pilots, each of which rocks, and neither of which has really been covered in popular press.

Banksy strikes again.

This time he docotored a whopping 500 copies of Paris Hilton's cd in 48 different records shops across the UK.

"That's hot."

He took her cd out, put his own in, and even changed the sleeve to include text and altered photos, one being a pic of Paris's body with a dog's head. This makes his museum prank look like small fries.

Checkout the coverage on the BBC, The Superficial, and the altered images of the cd cover.

This guy deserves some sort of award for this one.

Nike and Joy Division?

All white, with lots of details to offset the potentially too minimal palette, these sneakers have the look and feel of a pair of well-worn in Chuck Taylors with the Nike swoosh and a more complex design than Chuck Taylors giving them a cooler look.

Click this link to Hypebeast and this one to Cerysmatic Factory to see details of the shoes.

There are various pieces of text from Ian Curtis lightly stamped all over the shoes. One quote on the swoosh reads: "But I remember when we were young." - Ian Curtis

Genius.

Marina Abramovic, Matthew Barney, Marco Brambilla, Larry Clark, Gaspar Noé, Richard Prince, Sam Taylor-Wood.

What a lineup. Each of the above artists has made a short film that is part of a piece called Destricted, a continuing series of short films that will explore the fine line where art and pornography intersect.

Well-received at Cannes and Sundance and voted "Best Film" of 2005 by Art Forum, Destricted is being shown at the Tate Modern in London this month.

As far as I can tell, no US dates are planned as of yet. A DVD will be available from their MySpace site as soon as the Tate showings this month have finished. Times and dates of the showings are also listed there.

I found out about this via a cool website called Culture TV. You can read about them here. Signup for their mailing list for weekly updates featuring new projects, videos, films, etc. They also encourage site users to send in their own work and give feedback on the direction of the site, which rocks.

The Super Indie by Jac Currie

A lot of people have been talking about the New Orleans sound and getting into it in the last few years, and I'm sure the Katrina only adds to the hype, but "bounce" has been around forever, with local radio stations in full support and everyone all over that town ready to get down and shake it the second they're hit with that beat.

I love the strong expression of local pride, regionalism, and neighborhood respect that you find in the songs. It's all about life in the "Nolia", with frequent references to "Caliope", "9th Ward", "the Magnolia", and "Melpomene".

I'm also into the raunchiness and amazing beats. I like the roots and sources, as well as the new shit. For me, the new Lil Wayne and Juvenile tracks are just as good as DJ Jubilee and Ricky B classics...

Some purists argue that the roots go back to call and response style dance of 1950's and early 60's New Orleans Soul (artists like Ernie K-doe

), others are able to trace it back to 1982, and dierctly to the incessantly sampled "Triggerman" beat from the 1985/86 The Showboys track "Drag Rap". The "Triggerman" beat is all over early Bounce tracks. And you can hear strong influences from local Second Line parades and brass band drumming.

Check out this great "Bounce for Relief" mix

And this mix, on 's label, Mad Decent

You can find my favorite song of the moment on the Defend New Orleans Myspace, "Shake Fa Ya Hood", Ricky B

Also, check out the Manny Fresh lyrics on the "House Real Big" shirt I did for Just Another Rich Kid...

Vote, baby, vote.

My favorite band of the moment Wolf Parade is up for the Echo Songwriting Prize. I'm not quite sure what it is, but I do know that it's important enough that the band posted a link to the voting page on
