Fred Perry Subculture/Supreme + Marilyn Minter/Hot Chip

1. Iconic British streetwear brand Fred Perry loves new music. "Subculture is Fred Perry's new music initiative, committed to bringing you bright young talent, alongside the classic British artists that have had a long standing relationship with the brand. Why is Fred Perry involved with music? Because it is the original sportswear to streetwear brand - adopted firstly by Mods in 1959 because 'They could wear it all night and still look good in the morning'."

2. Some things don't quite make sense to me, but that doesn't mean I don't kinda get it and it definitely doesn't mean they're not hot. Case in point: New York powerhouse streetwear brand Supreme has teamed up with fashion photographer Marilyn Minter to create a series of 3 limited edition skateboards, which are available starting 04.10.08.

3. My favorite band of the hour -- Hot Chip -- are playing on 04.08.08 @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg (for the hefty ticket price of $35!) and at Terminal 5 on 04.12.08.

Warhol's Blowjob/Paranoid Park/Wood Wood @ CDG in Warsaw

1. Warhol, Warhol, Warhol. I keep saying I'm done with anything related to Warhol, but for some reason, this guy just won't die. Every time I think he's played, there's something I want to see or something that's too relevant to pass up. Case in point: Warhol's 1964 film Blowjob, which is playing @ The Tate Modern on 04.10.08.

2. He's done it again: Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park rocks. "Teenage skater Alex (Gabe Nevins) rides a freight train clandestinely, together with a man he has just met at a skate park, nicknamed Paranoid Park. While the train slowly moves, a guard walking on the side of the track tries to get them off the train by repeatedly hitting the boys with his flashlight. In self-defense and confusion, Alex hits him with his skateboard and the guard falls onto another track. The wheels of another train cut his body into two at his waist."

3. Danish designers and taste makers Wood Wood are packing up their wares and making a trip straight to the basement of the Comme Des Garcons Guerilla Store +4822 (ul. Koszykowa 1) in Warsaw.

Chinese Architects
by Byron Hawes

With all the hype about the Chinese art scene it's sometimes easy to forget that Beijing is at present playing host to one of the most vibrant (and determined) architectural pushes of any major city. The last few years has seen new projects by such luminaries as Shigeru Ban, Herzog & De Meuron, Rem Koolhaas and OMA, Paul Andreu, Kengo Kuma, and Riken Yamamoto, amongst others. Japan has long since been acknowledged as a fertile land, sprouting young architectural talents like so many sakura (and we in Beijing are still anxiously awaiting projects here from Ando Tadao and SANAA), but China has yet to be acknowledged as an architectural powerhouse. To that end I thought I'd take a second to introduce a couple of young starchitectural [sic] firms budding here in Beijing.

Who Would You Rather Makeout With: Perez Hilton or ?

1. It's no secret that Perez Hilton is nasty. He even calls himself P-Nasty, always beating anyone who might try to diss him to the punch. It's an effective yet predicatable defense mechanism for a fat, ugly dude who spends his time trash talking attractive, successful actors, musicians, and other public figures.

BASE Album Club Picks

One of our favorite stores in the world--super cool Miami store BASE--has hooked up this.hearts.on.fire. once again with their Album Club Picks. The picks are a very well-curated set of some of the sexiest, coolest music anywhere. I love it because it's so different from my usual taste and always introduces me to new artists that I would not have heard otherwise. You can listen to samples and buy each album by clicking on the links below.

10. BELVEDERE (BEADY BELLE) / The Scandinavian collective Beady Belle is a breath of fresh arctic air, gently and soulfully lulling you into their own jazzy kingdom.

9. WORKING NIGHTS (TRUS'ME) / Manchester native Trus'Me takes old soul and funk records, loops them up, adds drums and his own instrumentals, and voila, you have a new sound mixed from the old, eyeing the warmth and communal spirit of disco through a 21st Century lens.

8. ALL IS WELL (SAMAMIDON) / Vermont folkie Samamidan has been compared to Nick Drake, and with his soft, wistful vocal stylings and somber, introspective choices in material, the comparison is well justified.

Knitting Factory in the East Village??/Mika Miko/Hillary Clinton Is A Big Fat Liar

1. I got all kinds of depressed yesterday as I walked by the newly renovated shop space at 14th and 1st. (I secretly love that it's been boarded up, empty, and a place for down and out types to hangout in front of for so long.) It's going to be a fucking Hot & Crusty.

2. Spring is coming, the sun is out, but it's still fucking cold. This gives me that end-of-winter edge-of-my-seat aggressive energy. I want to workout, bounce off walls, hit stuff! All this has brought me to Mika Miko, the perfect spring has not-quite-but-almost-and-better-fucking-soon-or-somebody-dies sprung music.

3. In case you've been living under a rock, I wanted to make sure that you know Hillary Clintorious is a big fat liar (as if that's news) and she's finally been caught with video proof contradicting her wild assertions about landing amidst sniper fire on a trip to Bosnia.

2. Heard of Happy Tree Friends? I hadn't until this weekend. They look a bit like Murakami creatures, but with a dark, dark twist.

3. I went to see the Voluptuous Horror Of Karen Black at The Armory on Friday, which was a Deitch sponsored event for the Whitney Biennial.

4. As I was waiting for my paint to be mixed at Janovic Plaza on Saturday, I decided to walk to Union Square and back. On my way, I heard a familiar voice on the phone, but couldn't quite place it.

Left at the Altar / Margot At The Wedding + Reservation Road
by David Kawa

There's been a lot of talk in Hollywood about the "foreign invasion", if you will. There seemed to be a disproportionate number of Oscars leaving the country in the hands of foreign winners, this being most obvious in the acting categories, which were swept by Europeans. But is there really a dearth of great American performances out there? I don't think so.

Cassettes Won't Listen/Deitch + Bjork/

1. Have you heard of New Yorker Cassettes Won't Listen? Neither had I until his current front page feature on MySpace. "For the past five years, Jason Drake has been churning out electronic-tinged indie pop songs from his tiny apartment in Brooklyn under the name Cassettes Won't Listen. His latest album, Small Time Machine, won't hit record stores until next Tuesday, but you can listen to now, for free, exclusively on MySpace." Check it out! You're gonna love it.

2. Bjork's got a hot new video coming out for the track Wanderlust off her latest EP Volta. Who's got their hands in the mix?? None other than Deitch Projects, who we just found out now has a Deitch Studios located in Long Island City (4-40 44th Drive on the bank of the East River to be exact), which is where they'll be screening the video on 03.13.08 from 7-9 pm. "Deitch Projects and Ghost Robot will present Bjork's newest video directed by Encyclopedia Pictura. The video will be presented in 3D. This exclusive premiere will also include a behind-the-scenes look at how this complex 3D music video was achieved. The video is for the fourth single off Bjork's latest album Volta and takes the viewers on a trip through a mythical mountain valley, where the Icelandic singer wages a battle between her internal conflicts and the forces of nature. On hand will be props built for the video, original concept art, and behind the scenes photography." See you there!

10. FROM THE GENIUINE WORLD (GABRIELE POSO) / Combining elements of jazz, soul, afro-Cuban, as well as more traditional African music aesthetics, Gabriele Poso's From The Genuine World is stunningly beautiful.

9. LUFTKASTELLET 5 / Kenneth Bager's Luftkastellet series returns for a fifth volume with some of the most original and unique remixes around.

8. VOL. 1 SWING & CHAMPAGNE (WALDECK'S GRAMOPHONE) / Viennese sensation Waldeck's quirky Gramophone Vol.1 blends old and nu jazz with the ancient art of swing, bringing an old-school musical style into the 21st Century with the right mix of movement, verve and melody.

7. DIVE DEEP (MORCHEEBA) / Brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey's (aka Morcheeba) 5th album, Dive Deep, has lounge-pop ambience that translates to a pleasing, hypnotic and stylish sonic massage for your ears and soul.

6. DREAMS (WHITEST BOY ALIVE) / Minimalist bass driven grooves with a side of funk are what Berlin-based Whitest Boy Alive are all about, and the songs are about as enjoyable as pop-rock melodies get these days.

5. JUKEBOX (CAT POWER) / The confident, charismatic, smoky croon of Cat Power resurfaces on her second cover album, Jukebox as she straddles the line between funk, soul, and country with quite a diverse selection of covers, and one original, Song for Bobby.

4. JOYFUL (AYO) / Jazz, soul, reggae, folk and Latin are interspersed throughout German-born chanteuse Ayo's Joyful, with her lovely and smooth vocals leading the way.

3. VAMPIRE WEEKEND / Who are Vampire Weekend? They are 4 ex-Columbia students who banded together to form a sound that incorporates, ska, new wave, and Afro-pop into some pretty catchy tunes.

2. MOVEMENTS IN JAZZ FUSION (KEVIN YOST & HORACE JAMES) / Kevin Yost and Horace James have come together and produced Black Fuse, "fusing" Yost's deep house with James' love for jazz on a record which redefines musical sophistication whilst still keeping you glued to the dance floor.

1. NICKODEMUS ENDANGERED SPECIES REMIXED / There's no argument Nickodemus' debut album was a funky house classic. Now it's been remixed with a bevy of guest stars, from Quantic to Zeb and Thievery Corporation, putting a fresh spin on already outstanding tracks.

Diablo Cody + Letterman/DRV-IN/Jahcoozi

1. So I kinda wanted to hate Diablo Cody from all the stuff I'd heard about her, but then watched this interview with Cody on Letterman before the whole Juno thing and totally changed my mind. She's really witty and not at all what I'd expected.

2. Who knew: New York has a drive-in theater. Well, sorta. It's only going to be there for another month, so act fast. "Cruise downtown and park yourself at DRV-IN Manhattan's only drive-in cinema. Seven days a week, twice a night, passengers are transported to another time and place. Under starry skies and the foliage of a potted oak tree, guests watch classic films in a one-of-a-kind 1965 Ford Falcon convertible. With seating for six and a full concession stand, this unique theater setting is one of the Lower East Side's most intimate experiences. Starting with films from 1960 and progressing chronologically each night, DRV-IN speeds through four decades of cinematic achievement." Checkout their site for more info, movie times and availability, pics of the space, and loads of press and videos on the project. A new store is opening 04.15.08. We'll let you know what's in store as soon as we find out.

3. Last week, I told you about the Modeselektor/Sasha Perara track Silikon, which I've been listening to NON-STOP all weekend. Check it out again in case you missed it. Perera is the lead singer of Berlin-based group Jahcoozi, whose sound is hot. Checkout their Wikipedia entry, their MySpace to test drive a few songs, and their official site for music, pics, videos, and much more info. Catch them playing on 03.14.08 at Studio B in Brooklyn (although it's not listed yet on Studio B's calendar...) and on 03.15.08 in Austin at SXSW.
