Vice Photo Show

I'm pretty much 101% over anything having to do with Vice. I take that back: I'm 99% over anything having to do with Vice.

I say 99% because I just got an announcement for the 2008 Vice Photo Show and, if I were in LA, I'd probably check it out. Why am I into it, you ask? Tim Barber of art site tinyvices.com is curating a piece called Riddles and the show will feature photos by the late great Rennie Ellis.

Ramones: It's Alive: 1974-1996

I just checked out a Ramones live footage documentary -- Ramones: It's Alive: 1974-1996. It's a must-see for all Ramones fans and fans of New York punk rock.

"Pioneers of punk the Ramones are one of the most celebrated rock acts of all time, and their place in music history is undeniable. As the quintessential garage band, the Ramones made their earsplitting mark with electrifying live concerts. This historic release -- chock-full of more than hours of previously unreleased performance footage -- covers it all, from early appearances at the legendary CBGB to sold-out stadiums across the globe."

Pleasure Principle + assume vivid astro focus + Deitch

I dragged myself out of the house last night and went to Deitch in SoHo to catch a van to the Deitch LIC space for a special performance by assume vivid astro focus, followed by dinner and drinks on the patio.

First, though, I want to talk about the shirt I wore. I've loved these guys for a while, but haven't given them a shoutout on the site yet: New York designers Pleasure Principle. They do men's and women's clothes, including a line of tees for both. For guy's tees, the cut, the fit, the fabric and the prints all rock.

49,056 Hits !!!

It may not sound like much to the big dogs in the blog world, but yesterday this.hearts.on.fire. got the most hits ever in one day: 49,056 hits!! I should round it up to 50,000 for PR's sake (depending on who your PR is that could round up to 500,000), but I like the the idea of 49,056.

Please keep reading and do tell your friends about the site, but only the cool ones. Don't forget to check me out on MySpace, on Facebook, and signup for the weekly newsletter.

As a thank you, I give you a link to this classic 80's TV commercial. It makes me laugh every time. Don't forget this gem and, of course, this one. God, the 80's were retarded. I love it.

Salt & Samovar

It's rare these days that I see a band who sound better live than they do recorded. Usually, especially these days, it's the other way around.

I got an invite to see Brooklyn indie band Salt & Samovar at Joe's Pub on Monday and decided to go to their MySpace and have a listen. I liked their sound, but I wasn't bowled over. There was, though, a hint of something I heard that made me know the check it out. Thankfully, because these guys (and gals) are actually really good and sound amazing live, even better than the tracks I heard on their MySpace.

Raf Simons + Fred Perry

Ever elusive fashion designer Raf Simons has teamed up with forever cool British label Fred Perry for what can be truly called street/fashion.

"The collection references the fit and styling of classic Fred Perry skiwear first introduced in the early 1960's. A key piece includes a turtle neck sweater with laurel on the sleeve in merino wool. All pieces are slim fit with a retro silhouette. The palette is black, highlighted with the 30 leaf Fred Perry laurel originally used in the 1960's – the laurel will be used exclusively on Fred Perry and Raf Simons collaboration pieces and each item has its own laurel colour."

If, like me, you missed seeing Inside Deep Throat when it came out in 2005, do yourself a favor and rent it.

Sure, we've all have heard of the film, but I'm guessing most people under the age of 55 have never seen it. I didn't even know what the premise was, other than what's obvious by the name.

"A sexually frustrated woman Linda Lovelace asks her friend Helen for advice on how to achieve an orgasm. After a sex party provides no help, Helen recommends that Linda visit a doctor."

ERMP (East River Music Project)

One week from today is the second installment of ERMP. The lineup for the June 28th show: Titus Andronicus, Obits, Emperor X, and Blood City.

"The East River Music Project is a group of people dedicated to putting on free summer concerts of local music at the East River Amphitheater. The East River Amphitheater is part of East River Park, one of the city’s largest parks, running along the East River from 14th Street to Chinatown. The amphitheater is probably most famous for being used in the movie Wild Style, but it fell into disrepair over much of the 1980s and ’90s."

The show opens 06.25 and runs through 07.15.08. A book of the same name in an edition of 500 will be released simultaneously, the first publication of Go Books.

"Everyday Is Like Sunday presents a new form of photographic expression, in an era where photography is perceived to have reached its critical point of expression in the wake of trials and errors of countless photographers. Everything is possible for a photographer that, beyond portraying his subjects, unashamedly exposed himself. The photographer's chaotic gaze spirals into the abyss, where lies the endless potential of a blackhole."

Oxford Comma

If you're into Vampire Weekend, you may have asked yourself once or twice "What exactly is an Oxford comma anyway?"

"The serial comma (also known as the Oxford comma or Harvard comma) is the comma used immediately before a grammatical conjunction (nearly always and or or; sometimes nor) that precedes the last item in a list of three or more items. The phrase 'Portugal, Spain, and France', for example, is written with the serial comma, while 'Portugal, Spain and France', identical in meaning, is written without it."

Checkout Stacked, a sculpture just released by New York artist Charles Lutz.

"Stacked is the culmination of the two most recent series by Charles Lutz, Denial & Acceptance and Sold. The sculpture refers to Warhol's box sculptures of the 1960's as well as the trunks of the luxury manufacturer Louis Vuitton. Warhol’s box sculptures raised the everyday objects to the level of high art. Lutz takes the works a step further by raising them to the level of luxury, highlighting the absurdity of a Brillo, Heinz, Kellogg’s box becoming a status symbol. Stacked will be produced in a series of 7 plus one artist proof, each with it own unique color scheme and monogramming."

Food For Thought: Artichoke, Mudd, + Momofuku

On my way back from the Radar launch party last night, there was no line at Artichoke. Anyone who's passed this place or tried to get a slice knows that's unusual, as the line's usually 10+ deep as it was on our way to the party. We pounced and I got my first specialty artichoke-spinach slice. I'd heard that it's amazing, but a bit "too rich" for a whole slice. I couldn't disagree more. While I probably won't get it every time I go there -- and since I don't like to wait, I won't be going as much as I'd like to -- I'll definitely go back for more.

Bonjour Tristesse + MoMA

MoMA's Celebrating Summer movie series is going on now until 06.26.08. Included are JAWS, which I covered yesterday, and the 1958 British classic Bonjour Tristesse starring the iconic Jean Seberg.

"Seventeen-year-old Cécile spends her summer in a villa on the French Riviera with her father and two other women. Her father, Raymond, is a seductive man who has had many affairs. Among his women friends is Elsa Mackenbourg: she and Cécile get on well. When Elsa comes to the villa to spend her summer with Raymond, it is clear that she is the latest of many women whom Cécile has seen enter the life of her father and exit fairly quickly: young, superficial, and fashionable."

"The massive success of Jaws, released in the U.S. on June 20, 1975, gave us the term summer blockbuster, invented the contemporary event film, and redefined the seasonal rhythm of American moviegoing. Filmed mostly on Martha's Vineyard, that bastion of summering folk, Jaws tells the simple story of a great white shark with a penchant for eating foolish bathers who ignore the warnings of harried police chief Martin Brody."

"The Lightning Field, 1977, by the American sculptor Walter De Maria, is a work of Land Art situated in a remote area of the high desert of western New Mexico. The poles—two inches in diameter and averaging 20 feet and 7.5 inches in height—are spaced 220 feet apart and have solid pointed tips that define a horizontal plane. A sculpture to be walked in as well as viewed, The Lightning Field is intended to be experienced over an extended period of time." Like when there's some serious lightening!

No matter what anyone says, getting a really good cup of coffee isn't as easy as it sounds, even in New York. By now, the world (at least anyone with any taste) knows that Starbucks sucks. Raf Simons Redux

I just stumbled upon this hot online art book store aptly called Art Book.

One of the books that piqued my interest: Raf Simons Redux.

"Belgian fashion designer Raf Simons' clothes are both inspired by and designed for confident male outsiders. His references to youth movements (like punk, goth, and mod) are not meant to be retro; instead Simons tries to translate their energy and determination into modern statements about mental independence. Yet, although they are impeccably cut and created with love and care, clothes are not at the core of Simons' universe."

The Thermals

Sell outs? Not The Thermals.

"The band turned down a $50,000 offer for the right to use their song It's Trivia (from More Parts Per Million) in a Hummer commercial. Harris commented on the decision in a February 2006 asap article: 'We thought about it for about 15 seconds, maybe...it was a really easy decision. How could we go on after soundtracking Hummer? It's just so evil.'" Hot!

SaMANtha Ronson Kicks Perez Hilton's Ass

Poor Perez: he can't beat anyone in the weekly Celebrity Deth Match polls.

In last week's poll, I pitted him against the very unattractive faux girlfriend of Lindsay (I'll Do Anything Including Making With A Chick To Get Press) Lohan and he's losing miserably AGAIN!

SaMANtha Ronson 140 / Perez 7.

He really needs to hire an intern or get some of his purported fans over here to vote for him so he wins sooner or later. This week will be better, I promise. I'll try VERY hard to find someone less attractive than SaMANtha Ronson. Someone closer to Perez.

Please email me suggestions. I need some.

Made In Queens

Check this out: Made In Queens.

"Since last summer some Trinidadian teenagers living on the dreary outskirts of Queens have been putting their DIY skills to work rebuilding old bmx bikes into enormous homemade pa-systems on wheels. These bad boys pump out over 5000 watts each in a tight mix of everything from Shabba Ranks to Zapp & Roger".

Vampire Weekend @ Summer Stage

I love it when I expect something to be one way because of a name or a look and later realize I was sooooooo wrong.

Case in point: Vampire Weekend.

If you haven't heard of them (they're kinda old news, but new to me), think for 30 seconds: what would you expect a band named Vampire Weekend to sound like?

BATTLES

I'm on a music roll. That can only mean one thing: someone just burned a ton of cds for me. Poverty stricken bloggers can't afford to buy music and I had to uninstall Bit Torrent months ago, because I was getting an insane amount of viruses. (It's true: I use a PC.)

Have you heard BATTLES?!

It's math rock, which I know about only because I had a super stoner roommate in Brooklyn who was in a math rock band.

Sunset Rubdown

I'm sure you haven't heard the new Wolf Parade EP At Mount Zoomer yet, as it's not been officially released and I know you don't illegally download music. I know I don't.

I did, though, mysteriously get a copy of the EP and to be quite frank: it kinda sucks. In all fairness, maybe if I'd never heard Apologies To The Queen - which a friend and I said would be the EP we'd want to have if marooned on a desert island -- I might like it more.
