Dash Snow x Dan Colen @ Deitch/Free Subscription x Nylon Digital/Joy Division US Release Date
1. "Thirty volunteers spent three days shredding two-thousand New York City telephone books in preparation for one of the most unusual exhibitions ever presented by a New York gallery: Dash Snow and Dan Colen’s NEST. Adapting their infamous “hamster nest” to 76 Grand Street, they reveal to the public a performance they have until now created only in private. The resulting pandemonium is on view, in addition to video and photographic documentation." More info on Deitch's site and the press release. Checkout the flyer. It looks totally digusting!
3. The long-awaited Joy Divison feature film Control will have its U.S. theatrical premiere at one of our favorite theaters--Film Forum in New York City--on October 10, 2007. Mark your calendars. And get your tickets early if you want to see it opening night. Without a doubt, it will sell out. "This marks the feature debut of acclaimed rock photographer / music video director Anton Corbijn, who photographed Joy Division early in his career. British actor Sam Riley gives an unforgettable performance as Ian Curtis and Samantha Morton (Sweet And Lowdown, In America) portrays his wife, Deborah, upon whose memoir the film is based. Control premiered in the Directors' Fortnight section of the 2007 Cannes film festival, where it won three prizes." Checkout the trailer here (not sure what the deal is, but I can't find one without French subtitles!), the band's MySpace (where you can listen to a few songs, and this video featuring live performances, of Transmission & She's Lost Control, as well as an interview with Curtis. And don't forget to checkout this pic of Riley on the set. Pretty convincing, I must say.
TV On The Radio @ McCarren Pool/Bela Lugosi's Dead
1. It's going to be mayhem. TV On The Radio's date to play McCarren Pool has finally arrived: this Sunday, 07.29.07. Weather.com calls for scattered rain, which could keep some folks away, but I highly doubt it. This is the most-highly anticipated music event in the city this summer. I'd skip my mom's birthday for this one. If you're not feeling it, don't forget about The Anarchy Festival in Tompkins Square Park and Deitch's presentation of The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black on the same day at 5pm. It too will be craziness, but not the same kind of craziness that happens when you get a bunch of New York hipsters together trying to be cool. We all know how ugly that can get.
2. I was shocked last week to find out that not everyone's heard of Bauhaus. The band, not the German art and architectural style. This means that they've probably also never heard the band's first and most famous song: Bela Lugosi's Dead. "Over nine minutes long and recorded live in the studio in a single take, it did not enter the UK pop charts, but remained on sale for many years thereafter. By far their most famous work, its minimalist, free-form nature evoked a mixture of The Doors, early Pink Floyd and experimental Krautrock bands such as Can and Neu!. The song was used to score the first ten minutes of the 1983 Tony Scott vampire film The Hunger which starred Catherine Deneuve & David Bowie." I've uploaded the original Bela Lugosi for you to checkout and the other song on the originally released single, Boys, which is equally as hot. Don't forget the band's official site, this video for the song, and a version by Nouvelle Vague on Last.fm.
One of our favorite stores in the world--super cool Miami store BASE--has hooked up this.hearts.on.fire. once again with their Album Club Picks. The picks are a very well-curated set of some of the sexiest, coolest music anywhere. I love it because it's so different from my usual taste and always introduces me to new artists that I would not have heard otherwise. You can listen to samples and buy each album by clicking on the links below.
10. Peder (And He Just Pointed To The Sky) / Slow, dark, cinematic and soulful, Peder's new disc, And He Just Pointed To the Sky...demands your complete attention but the payoff is well worth it.
9. Marsmobil (Minx) / Inspired by the trashy analog sound aesthetics of the 60s and 70s, Marsmobil merges retro and future, space-pop and Burt Bacharach-like orchestrations to "the most wonderful and organic music of the new musical millennium".
8. Ikon (Signs) / Subtle, gorgeous, and filled with lush grooves and seductive vocals, Ikon has been compared to Air and Royskopp and with good reason, a quality electronic band like this only comes along once in a while.
7. Frequent Flyer Havana Combining Latin rhythms and African percussion together with jazz, Havana's sound is legendary. Kinky sweet's Frequent Flyer series makes a stop in Havana to sample the sound for the first time with a two disc collection of the best music from this global melting pot.
6. Mark Ronson (Version) / Mark Ronson's Versions reinvents beloved "old" tunes, from Radiohead to Coldplay with his patented musical style of mixing smooth 60's and 70's era soul with pop.
5. Matthew Dear (ASA Breed) / Inventive, engrossing, and far ahead of its time, Mathew Dear's Asa Breed incorporates minimal techno and pop-rock with hints of new wave, indie rock, Afropop and even country for one of the most accomplished electronic crossovers this year.
4. Indiarama On this excellent two-disc collection you'll find the finest Indian music courtesy of Bollywood, from the chilled out first disc, to the floor stompers and Bhangra inspired shakers of the second disc, this is the real music of India.
3. DJ Vadim (The Soundcatcher) / Reggae, dub, hip-hop, Dj Vadim has taken all kinds of roots music and blended them into an outstanding electronic mix on The Soundcatcher.
2. Jonathan Krisp (No Horse, No Wife, No Moustache) / Uk wunderkind Jonathan Krisp takes crazy sounds from his various influences (he claims natural history, ornithology and raves!) and organically fuses them into a musical mix of dance, disco and electronica, with a little bit of jazz thrown in.
1. Q-Burns Astract Message Mix (Agave Nectar Vol. 1) / "Ass-shaking house and sensual breaks", these are the perfect words to describe Q-Burns Abstract Message's new mix for Orlando-based Agave records, Agave Nectar Volume 1.
Boombox x iD x Terence Koh/Voloptuous Horror Of Karen Black x Deitch
1. i-D Magazine and uber chic underground London club BoomBox hosted the artist-who-just-won't-stop Terence Koh last week for a performance entitled Twin Star Rebirth Till Twin Star Explode. Designers Gareth Pugh and Jeremy Scott were on hand as Guest DJs for the night. If, like us, you missed it, checkout pics by Alastair Allan here.
2. If you're in the East Village Sunday (07.289.07) afternoon, stop by Tompkins Square Park for the Anarchy Festival and to see the marvel that is The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black, who will be putting on a show at 5pm sponsored by Deitch. "The Voluptuous Horror Of Karen Black is the brainchild of artist and performer Kembra Pfahler, whose do-it-yourself ideals have shaped both the band's sound and their iconic visual style, and from whose solo performance work and 'Super 8' films the group organically formed. The band originally was in fact initially conceived in an effort to soundtrack these early performances in a manner befitting their highly theatric nature." Don't forget to checkout this profile of actress Karen Black, who was the inspiration for it all.
1. I can't believe today has finally arrived: the day the Weeds Season 2 DVDs release!! Given I don't have cable, I am 100% dependent on Netflix for consumption of such series. If you haven't seen any of the episodes yet, which I know is very common because almost no one I ask has, do yourself a favor and rent or buy Season 1 today. The show is amazing. Checkout Wikipedia for more info and become their friend on MySpace.
2. Jean-Claude and Christo are at it again: this time, it's a pyramid made of empty oil barrels in the UAE. "Conceived in 1977, the Mastaba will have an overall surfacing of 55-gallon stainless steel oil barrels of various bright colors. Hundreds of bright colors, as enchanting as Islamic mosaics, will give a constantly changing visual experience according to the time of the day and the quality of the light." And unlike their most famous works, this one will be permanent. Checkout their site for more info and drawings, this new brief on Yahoo News, and this bio on the artists and pics of previous works.
The Dressler/Fall & Winter Lines @ Dover Street Market
1. If you haven't made it to The Dressler in Williamsburg yet, now's the time. It's tough getting me to go to Brooklyn since I moved back into the city, but this was a no-brainer. Owned by the same folks who own Diner and Dumont (which has one of my favorite patios in all of New York), the restaurant, opened last year, is simply amazing and nothing in Manhattan compares to in terms of decor, atmosphere, menu, and prices. Even Frank "I Hate Everything" Bruni from the NY Times, gave it a good review. And don't forget to checkout their menus, including the desserts, which are worth every calorie.
3. If you're feeling her the way I do, you'll definitely want to checkout A Night of Billie Holiday: Remixed & Reimagined. "Following the launch of Nina Simone...Remixed & Reimagined, Legacy Recordings and Turntables On The Hudson bring you the second installment in this critically acclaimed series. The most heartfelt vintage master-tape performances of Billie Holiday were selected and then were bestowed upon the most groove-worthy remixers of the 21st century. Remixers include Tony Humphries, DJ Logic, Charles Feelgood, Nickodemus & Zeb, and more." Checkout the MySpace for the project. And don't miss the party: Friday, 08.03.07 from 7 pm - 9 pm @ the South Street Seaport, Fulton & South Streets at Pier 17. See you there.
Warhol Factory X Levi's X Damien Hirst/APC Fall Winter Collection/Stop Me
1. I know, I know: stop with all the Damien Hirst already. I can't help myself. This one's too good to pass up. A collaboration between Hirst & Warhol Factory X Levi's label. Says WWD: British artist Damien Hirst is lending his talents to Levi Strauss on a new project. Hirst is collaborating with the San Francisco denim giant on the spring 2008 collection of the company's Warhol Factory X Levi's label, which sells in stores such as Barneys New York, Fred Segal, and American Rag. The collection will be introduced in a runway show during New York Fashion Week in September, showing under the name Warhol Factory X Levi's X Damien Hirst. Can't wait!
2. The APCFall/Winter 2007 collection has just been released. Check it out. I used to think APC was so hot and now I think it's so "eh". Every time I drop by the SOHO shop, I get that "bait and switch" sensation. I want it to be cool and it seems like it's going to be, but it always falls flat. Boring clothes with boring cuts in boring colors. It's kinda like Banana Republic meets H&M but more expensive and with a brand image that tries to convince you you're getting something cooler.
3. So I got the press release for this. Listened to a few songs. Decided not to cover it. Then I'm out tonight with some friends. Taking a little break from work. Dinner and drinks at my super favorite restaurant in town: Lil' Frankie's. Inevitably, we make our way to my hands-down favorite bar: Lucy's. Emily puts on a song and I'm sold!! It's from Mark Ronson's new CD: Version. The song: a remake of The Smiths classic Stop Me featuring Daniel Merriweather. Amazing. Checkout the video. I'm sure you'll agree.
Deitch's Art Parade/Ralph Lauren Rugby @ Colette/Cassius x Pharell/Excuse My Beauty
1. Calling all artists! It's that time of year again: time to submit your proposal for the Deitch Art Parade. The deadline is this Friday, 07.20.07. Click here for more information. "Deitch Projects, Creative Time and Paper Magazine are pleased to announce the third annual Art Parade. The parade will take place on Saturday September 8, at 4PM. The route will begin on Houston and follow West Broadway, ending on Grand Street. Following the success of the past two Art Parades, artists, performers and designers are again being invited to create floats, placards, portable sculptures, kites, performances and street spectacles." Checkout pics from the 2006 parade and the one from 2005. If you have a thing for seeing people get naked, you should definitely check this out!
2. What the &%*#? Ralph Lauren Rugby will have a store in store at Colette?? "With the Rugby World Cup set to debut in France in two months—since its creation in 1987, this is the first time it will take place in the City of Lights—Colette will present exclusively the preppy Ivy League sensibility of Ralph Lauren’s Rugby collection on a worldwide basis from Sept. 3 to 15, to coincide with the kick-off here." Read the full story at FWD's site.
3. Remember Cassius? If you're anything like me, you couldn't stop listening to their EP 1999 a few years back. Just when I thought they were totally MIA, I get an email about a song they did last fall on their EP 15 Again with Pharrell called Eye Water. Check this video on YouTube!! Don't forget their MySpace, their official site, and the duo's bio.
4. Do yourself a favor and sit down for this one: this is hands down the funniest video currently on YouTube. It's full of quotes that will ensure you're the life of any party. "Excuse my beau-teee."
2. I've never bought a copy of Arkitip before, but will for the very first time with the current issue: Issue0041 Arkitip x OriginalFake x Incase. "OriginalFake is the brain child of the inimitable contemporary artist, KAWS. Last year he opened his first boutique in the Aoyama district of Tokyo, Japan with Medicom Toy. This summer marks the 1 year anniversary of the opening. To recognize the occasion we have once again produced an issue edition with this prolific artist.
Arkitip and KAWS together have partnered with bag specialist Incase to create a custom designed laptop sleeve that will serve as the packaging for this special anniversary issue edition. Along with designing the packaging and issue edition, KAWS has curated the entire artist's sections of this issue. This is unprecedented in Arkitip's history." Checkout the list of artists and make sure to get one before it's too late!! Don't forget to checkout the page of back issues. They make great presents.
2. Don't forget to checkout the theme song in Crash called Warm Leatherette by The Normal. It's super hot. The song, which is definitely as big a cult classic as the film itself, was later remade by host of artists, including Grace Jones. Checkout this video of her performing it live.
3. This is what rocks about MySpace: "In honor of their third album release Our Love to Admire, Interpol has uploaded an exclusive track. Listen to "The Heinrich Maneuver (Phone Remix)" right now, exclusively on MySpace!" It's a very un-Interpol remix. I think it's hot. Let me know what you think.
3. French wunderkinds Kitsuné have teamed up with British designer and perfumer James Heeley to make this hot little candle Glace au Sesame Noir (Black Sesame Seed Ice Cream). Says Kitsuné: "A special edition featuring an assortment of gourmet flavours (caramel, honey and vanilla), the candle diffuses thousands upon thousands of individual sesame seeds in style. Think about Sesame Street!" Available at Colette. You can also get all of their Maison cd's and one special electric blue T in one package on Honeyee.com; but only if you read Japanese, that is.
4. I'm a bit over all the lamps, chandeliers, and lighting options these days, but I've just come across something that's super fresh. Chris Kabel of Droog Design--the envy of all designers everywhere--has designed a killer light called The Sticky Lamp. You can put them virtually anywhere you want: just peel and stick to any flat surface. They're genius! Availble at DutchByDesign. And don't forget Kabel's personal site. His work is top notch.
12.. Dear Prudence (Twice Upon A Time) 11.. Hybrid (Kaleidoscope) 10.. Peek-A-Boo (Peep Show) 9... The Passenger (Through The Looking Glass) 8... Trophy (Kaleidoscope) 7... Arabian Nights (Juju) 6... Kiss Them For Me (Superstition) 5... Happy House (Kaleidoscope) 4... Spellbound (Juju) 3... Skin (Kaleidoscope) 2... Hong Kong Garden (Once Upon A Time) 1... Christine (Kaleidoscope)
Here's a download of the #1 song, Christine, for you to checkout.
Checkout her profile on Wikipedia here. And this fan site. Don't forget the lyrics to her songs. And a complete discography.
Our Love To Admire/I Hate Myself And Want To Die/Una Pizza Napoletana
1. I've been so busy, I missed the release of Interpol's latest EP Our Love To Admire, which dropped 07.10.07. Now that's busy! Looks like we missed that window when all of the songs from the EP were being streamed for free. It doesn't seem to be on their MySpace (although you can listen to the first single The Heinrich Maneuver there, as well as listen to another single from the EP Pioneer From The Falls and get all their tour dates). It was on this page on MTV's site, but has been taken down. Looks like you'll have to buy it. Checkout the video for The Heinrich Maneuver. It's hot. Don't forget to checkout their site. It's chock full of useful info.
2. Checkout Ju$t Another Rich Kid's piece for The Playground entitled I Hate Myself And Want To Die. It's Kate Moss, text, and blood. What could be hotter?? We've just gotten word that the editors are sending us a few images from Edition 1 to give you a peak at what to expect when it hits stores in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
3. Everyone knows I'm a huge fan of Pizza Gruppo (186 Avenue B btwn 11/12). If you haven't been, drop what you're doing and go right now! After reading this review of Una Pizza Napoletana (349 E 12th Street btwn 1/2) in the NY Times, though, I have to see what the hype is all about. "Una Pizza is a completely unusual place run by a guy, Anthony Mangieri, who, depending on your point of view, is either a pizza visionary or a crazy man. He makes pizza in the Neapolitan fashion, and that’s all he serves. No salads, no pasta, no desserts. And he serves only four pizzas: marinara, with no cheese; margherita, with tomatoes, cheese and basil; bianca, with no tomato, and filetti, with cherry tomatoes and mozzarella." Remember: no reservations and when the crust runs out for the night, the show is over!
2. Down the block at Yvon Lambert was the opening for Mario Testino: At Home, which runs through 08.20.07. The uber photographer was on hand last night for the opening along with a bevy of art world, media, and fashion big names. Of note: Anna Wintour, Sienna Miller, pop celebrity artist Elizabeth Peyton, and Vogue's Grace Coddington. The show is a recreation of Testino's livingroom filled with artworks from his personal collection. Check it out!
Which Smurf?/Michael Moore For President/The Hours & Damien Hirst
1. Which Smurf are you? I'm Painter: "You are Painter Smurf. You are creative, expressive and always expanding your ways. You definitely have an artistic soul. You admit that you can be moody at times, but that just shows what a passionate person you are! You are quite imaginative and wish you had more time for creative pursuits. You are an original." I wish I were Vanity or Jokey, but it could be worse!! Although looking at today's postings, I'd say I'm more like Multiple Personality Smurf than any of the others.
2. Watch Michael Moore rip Wolf Blitzer a new a**hole. This is amazing. I used to not like his abrasive nature, but I've changed my mind. This guy rocks. He also uses the term "the American people" as much if not more than any presidential candidate. He's definitely getting my vote for President!!
3. Checkout The Hours, tauted by The Guardian as "Britain's most powerful new band". Here's what the band has to say: "We are The Hours. It's true. We mean what we say. Every note. Every beat. Every syllable. We believe it's time for a change. It's time to break the cycle, turn over onto a fresh page." Have a peak at their MySpace page. Sample a few of their songs. If you really like what you hear, checkout this page on the band's site, where you can stream every song from their EP Narcissus Road, and watch videos for a few of them. If you love it, go to Napster and buy it all. One thing's for sure: having album artwork by Damien Hirst is never a bad thing, especially when paired with a hot new band.
1. In case you missed it in the post below, if you're into sneakers, you have to checkout Flight Club NY (254 Greene Street btwn 8th and Waverly). Or Flight Club LA, if you're on that side of the country. I stopped by to see what it was all about today and the store is for reals. It's super barebones in terms of interior decorating: the focus is on the sneakers, which pack the walls from floor to ceiling. The super rare $400 plus pairs are under lock and key in a display case! Flight Club NY is currently having a Buy One, Get One 1/2 Off Sale, so get in before it's over. It's by far the best sneaker store I've been to in NYC. Checkout their site to get a feel of what they're all about and for more info on selling your sneakers in the store on consignment.
2. Kinda like tattoos, once you get a pair of Air Jordans, all you want is more. Now that I own a pair of Retro Jordan III's in White/Fire Red/Cement Gray, all I think about is how I'm going to round up some cash to get myself a few new pairs. It's not just about the multiple retro versions coming out, but the color combos in each style. Take the Retro Jordan III Black Cat, an all black version of the style. So hot. Hipsters can find this version at uber-cool We Sold Out. Savvy hipsters can find them for $45 dollars less (and probably a lot less shipping if you're in the US) at FinishLine.com. Don't forget to checkout the Pure White verion, the Jordan III LS in Brisk Blue, and this 2 pair set of Air Jordan I's aptly named Old Love/New Love, as it contains a remake of the very first pair of Jordans ever along with a pair in a fresh, new color scheme. If you prefer to shop in a store and not online, which works better if you're not sure what you want and how a certain style will fit, drop by Flight Club New York or Flight Club LA. They have a sick selection of of sneakers you won't find housed under any other roof.
1. Ju$t Another Rich Kid has just released a photo by New York photographer Koji Yano of the latest piece from the Indulgences series: Indulgences No. 5 (Nike Dunk High). The gold-dipped pair of Nikes is available in an edition of five (5) and is currently part of an installation on now through 07.28.07 at Anna Kustera gallery in New York. Checkout Ju$t Another Rich Kid's site, the gallery site for more info and pics of the show, and this entry on ArtForum's site, where the show is listed as one of the current Critic's Picks. Check it out before it's too late!
1. Check this out: there's going to be a floating pool (The Floating Pool Lady) just off the Brooklyn waterfront in Brooklyn Heights. Damn! That's hot (or cool as the case may be). "The pool is 25 meters long, or just over 82 feet, is 4 feet deep and has 7 lanes. Admission will be limited to 175 and will be free." If all goes well, it will open tomorrow. See the full article in the NY Times.
2. You've gotta checkout the hottest new East Village bistro before it blows up! Gramercy Tavern veteran Andrew Robinson's Tree is the best kept culinary secret in the neighborhood. As expected given the chef/owner's pedigree, the food is amazing. Surprisingly, the prices won't break the bank. Don't miss Sunday brunch and the patio out back, perfect for a long wine-filled dinner with friends and even better for a date. Checkout this review in NY Mag, the brunch menu, and the dinner menu. And make sure to stop in before the secret gets out.
Every American needs to see Sicko, Michael Moore's just-released documentary about the state of the American health care system.
As someone who works 6-7 days/week without health insurance, the movie definitely hit home. Keep in mind, though, the movie isn't about "the 50 million uninsured Americans" but the issues with those who are insured: like the lady who was retroactively denied payment on a claim because of a prior yeast infection; a woman who's husband died because her HMO wouldn't cover a bone marrow transplant that may have saved his life; and the mother of a now deceased 2 year old who was denied care at an LA emergency room for her daughter's 104 degree temperature because it was out of network.
He visits clinics in Canada, England, and France, as well as interviews both natives and Americans living in these countries. You'll be amazed at what he finds out and probably have fleeting thoughts of moving.
Michael Moore has risen, in my humble opinion, to the ranks of being a US national treasure. I hope he mimicks Woody Allen's production schedule and makes one film/year. America needs Michael Moore. Checkout this video clip from the premiere in New York. The crowd loves the guy.
1. Jill Magid's With Full Consent @ Gagosian's Madison Avenue gallery (980 Madison Avenue). "The show features an array of works linked by the investigation of the emotional and philosophical relationship between 'protective' institutions and conventions, and individual identity." Says Magid, "I seek intimate relationships with impersonal structures. The systems I choose to work with, such as police, secret services, CCTV and forensic identification, function at a distance, with a wide-angle perspective, equalizing everyone and erasing the individual." Checkout the press release for the show here, as well as images of the work and additional info on Gagosian's site.
2. Jim Isermann'sVinyl Smashup @ Deitch Projects (18 Wooster Street) now through 08.04.07. "Working with the subtle variations in shape and light of the gallery walls, and its various levels, Isermann adapts his vinyl designs to create a dynamic choreography of space. His vinyl wall decals give form to surfaces by means of colors, patterns, reflections, and various other haptic and optic qualities." The works cover the gallery walls from floor to ceiling. This one is a must see. Checkout the press release, more info on Deitch's site, and Isermann's site.
3. And, if you're in London, both Jeff Koons shows at Gagosian's galleries there: Hulk Elvis @ Britannia Street (6-24 Britannia Street) and Popeye @ the Davies Street space (17-19 Davies Street). Checkout the press release for Hulk Elvis, the work, and the info page on Gagosian's site. And don't forget the press release, the info page for the Popeye show, and additional info on the artist. One of my trusted sources in London tells me both shows are amazing. I'm just trying to figure out how to get my hands on Monkey Train (Dots), although I have a feeling the show was soldout before it even opened.
