Don't Look Back/DVNO/Green Label Art

1. Now that you've seen what Cate Blanchett and the late Heath Ledger looked like as Bob Dylan, see what Bob Dylan looked like as himself in D.A. Pennebaker's 1967 documentary Don't Look Back. The film covers Dylan's 1965 concert tour of the United Kingdom and opens at Film Forum 02.01.08. Click here to get tickets and here for more information. If you're a Dylan fan, this rarely-shown film is a must-see.

2. Although I just downloaded the 4 track D.A.N.C.E. remixes pack on iTunes, my new favorite Justice track is definitely DVNO. Checkout their MySpace to listen to the radio edit of said track and checkout the video on last.fm. And don't forget: Justice @ MSG on 03.11.08.

3. Corporate doesn't have to suck, it's just that 9 times out of 10 it does. One current exception to that well-known rule of thumb: Mountain Dew's Green Label Art project. After weeks of hype and buildup, the project has finally launched and the identities of the six (6) well-known artists chosen to customize MD bottles, which will be available for a limited time only, has been revealed. In the mix: old school New York grafitti artist Haze, Chicago illustrator Chuck Anderson, Troy Denning, owner of LES tattoo parlor and art gallery Invisible NYC, Dez, Peat Wollaeger, and Scott Lenhardt + Danny Davis. Definitely take a look at the official site, where you can see the artwork, read bios, and watch videos of the artists explaining their ideas and inspiration. And don't forget to stop by your local deli and check them out. Art for the masses!

Duchamp, Man Ray, Picabia @ The Tate Modern/Bob Mould's New EP

1. The Tate Modern has a really hot show coming up: Duchamp, Many Ray, Picabia, a 400 piece group show that opens on 02.21.08. "This provocative exhibition presents three colossal 20th century artists who changed the course of art forever - Marcel Duchamp, the father of conceptualism and creator of the 'readymade', Man Ray, the celebrated photographer and painter, and Francis Picabia, the French painter and poet." Don't miss this one.

2. Bob Mould's got a new EP out -- District Line -- and MySpace is letting us check it out on their site before it hits stores on 02.05.08. "Following 2005's acclaimed, return-to-bracing Body of Song, Bob Mould is poised to rip the roof off further with the hard-hitting, elastic District Line - his first for Anti Records." Mould is the founder of 80's heavy metal band Hüsker Dü. "Hüsker Dü first gained notice as a 'speed-core' punk rock group, with a series of recordings on the independent label SST Records. Over time, however, Mould and his bandmates evolved musically, adding tuneful melodies to their explosive sound." Check out the tracks on MySpace. Fans of Mould will love it without a doubt and anyone who's not a fan will be one after a few listens. Mould is a force to be reckoned with.

nice collective's new romantics/The Knife

1. Our friends Joey + Ian from nice collective were in town last week for an under the radar debut of their Fall/Winter 2008 collection -- New Romantics. The SF-based duo teamed up with Surface Magazine for the party/presentation at a super chic subterranean gallery in Tribeca. Kenny Kenny was on the door. Coldplay and Moby were in the house. The crowd was hot. The music was amazing (Souxsie, Bauhaus, Joy Division, Bowie) and the collection: if you know anything about this designing duo, you'll know it was spot on. It's like they can do no wrong. Checkout their Wikipedia entry and buy yourself some stuff online at Hejfina.com.

2. If you're not yet familiar with Swedish duo The Knife, it's time you checked them out. "The Knife is a musical duo consisting of siblings Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer, who also run their own record company, Rabid Records. One of the group's distinguishing characteristics is their unwillingness to cooperate with the media or the mainstream music scene. The group rarely makes public appearances, most of their promotional photos feature the members wearing masks, usually venetian masks and until recently, they outright refused to perform live concerts." Hot. Checkout their MySpace to test drive a few songs, their official website, this animated video for NY Hotel, and this live video of the band performing their hit Silent Shout. The EP of the same name was named Best Album of 2006 by Pitchfork.

Jeremy Blake's Wild Choir

1. Artworld superstar turned artworld suicide shocker Jeremy Blake has a show -- Wild Choir: Cinematic Portaits -- currently on view at the Corcoran Gallery in DC. "Jeremy Blake's lush digital videos combine representational and abstract imagery to create visual narratives that are dreamy, historical, and richly psychological. Renowned for his shimmering, hallucinogenic 'moving paintings', which loop seamlessly without beginning or end, Blake was influenced as much by Hollywood culture as by the history of modernism." If you're not familiar with Blake, you've got to checkout his work. It's incredible. Don't forget to checkout this video he did for Beck's Round The Bend in 2002, this bootleg video of his super famous piece Winchester, which I remember seeing in the Whitney Biennial a few years back, and this in-depth piece in Vanity Fair on the mysterious death of Blake and his long-time companion Theresa Duncan earlier this year.

Obama Top 10/Glassbooth/Who Is Jack Johnson?

1. Checkout this video of future US President Barack Obama on Letterman reading his Top 10. It rocks.

2. Yes, it's true: more politics. Checkout Glassbooth.org. "Glassbooth connects you to the 2008 presidential candidate that represents your beliefs the best." it's a non-profit that has a short quiz on their site where you answer questions about policies and issues that matter most to you. The site uses your answers and matches you up with the candidate who most closely matches your choices and views. It's really hot. My match: Barack Obama, who I'm officially endorsing for President. Not that anyone cares, except me, but...

3. When I was writing the piece on Coachella pre-sale tickets earlier in the week, I saw his name as a headliner and not recognizing it, I ignored it. Then I logged onto CNN today only to watch a video of Jack Johnson giving us a tour of the "green" recording studio where his latest EP -- Sleep Through The Static -- was recorded. So who is this Jack Johnson who seems to have hit some level of musical fame without my knowing it. "Jack Hody Johnson (born May 18, 1975) is a Hawaii-born American singer-songwriter, musician, filmmaker, and surfer who achieved commercial success and a dedicated following, after the release of his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales in 2001. He has since released three more albums, and a number of EPs. His music genre is best described as acoustic/soft rock/adult alternative." Checkout his MySpace (where a handful of tracks from the new EP are currently available to listen to), this piece and video on TropRock.com, and this video of Johnson and Ben Harper performing Gone, which makes perfect sense to me as Johnson sounds a lot like Harper. One thing's for sure: this guy's got a killer voice.

Cy Twombly in Rome/The Streets

1. I've always been a big fan of Cy Twombly, despite the fact that some of his later work lacked the beauty of earlier pieces. This is so not the case with a current body of work the artist is currently showing at Gagosian's Rome gallery. Entitled Three Notes From Salalah, the work in the show is nothing short of amazing: it's definitely Twombly's signature style, but with an updated twist that makes it fresh, yet identifiable. You'll have to see it to know what I mean. Checkout the official press release on Gagosian's site with more info on the show and this page with gallery view pics. Don't forget to checkout this bio on the artist on the Guggenheim's site and this link to the artist's work.

2. I've heard this guy's name a million times and even heard of his "band", but it wasn't until last week when a friend burned me a CD of his top 10 iTunes playlist that I finally heard his music. Who might this be? Mike Skinner aka The Streets. And now I'm addicted. "Mike Skinner (born November 27, 1978), more commonly known by his stage name The Streets, is a rapper from Birmingham, England." Checkout his MySpace to test drive a few songs (especially his remake of Elton John's Your Song. It's like really bad karaoke...), his official website, this video for his 2004 hit "Fit But You Know It", and this piece in NME about the recent "death" of his record label The Beats.

PUMA Basket Mid II/Coachella PreSale Tickets

1. PUMA's got a hot new style out: introducing the Suede Mid II, an adaptation of the original suede. This time with a higher cut but still true to its roots in early hip-hop and break dancing. Taken straight from the PUMA archive the Suede Mid II is an alternative to the beloved Suede. This season we are offering two distinct color ways; a vibrant green with a chocolate brown form stripe and a navy with a straw colored form stripe. Either one will defiantly stand out amongst a crowd and turn heads. Available now at PUMA online for $75.00. While you're at it, checkout the 917 Lo and 917 Mid. They're my favorites.

2. It's that time of year again folks. Coachella is approaching: 04.25 - 04.27.07. Time to get your tickets. They officially go on sale tomorrow at 10am. There's also a certain lot of weekend pass tickets on sale now until 10pm. Today's pre-sale tix on sale until they run out and you need a password: try DESERT. That's what they sent us. Who's playing? The Breeders, Spank Rock, Portishead, Kraftwerk, The Teenagers, New Young Pony Club, Roger Waters, Love & Rockets, Justice, Chromeo, The Streets, Booka Shade, Black Mountain, and The Horrors. Don't forget to checkout the Info/FAQ of the site if you plan on attending. And I'm sure by now everyone's heard of The All Points West Music & Arts Festival (aka Coachella East): the new three-day event set for August 8, 9 and 10, 2008 at Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Lineup to follow.

M/M (Paris) at Centre Pompidou/Pisszine

1. One of our favorite teams of graphic artists M/M (Paris) have a show -- Vision Tenance -- opening on 01.23.08 at the Centre Pompidou in gay Paree. I'd tell you more about the show, but the info on Centre Pompidou's site is all in french and my skills are a little rusty. See for yourself. Nonetheless, check out the show. M/M (Paris) rarely disappoint. Don't forget to have a look at their online poster catalog. It's full of killer designs that anyone can afford!

2. Speaking of bodily fluids: Pisszine has a new issue out. Issue 3 / The INK Issue. "The INK issue explores the world of tattooing through essays, interviews, visual art and photography." What is Pisszine, you ask? "PISSZINE is a handmade quarterly international queerhomofag art publication. Photography, interviews, drawings and essays explore pissing as a transgressive, sexual and creative act." In the current issue: LEE WAGSTAFF, TIM KRUGER by Bruce LaBruce, DORIAN WOOD, TJ NORRIS,ALDO by Rigo Maldonado, BORIS by Steven Miller, and of course WOLFBOY. You can buy the current and past issues here. Don't forget this list of points of sale around the world for the zine!

Hillary Clinton's New Perfume/White on White/This Is England

1. This is hysterical. With the race heating up, I think it's time to dip my little toe into politics. I'm going to test the waters and see where it goes. Something against Hillary Clinton seems like the perfect place to start!

2. I'm temporarily off Air Jordans III's. They're just too expensive. I am still into all white sneakers though and found the sickest pair of white on white Vans canvas hightops this weekend at Classic Kicks. I said I'd never buy Vans because they're just too trendy, but I kinda didn't since you can't really see the stripe unless you look really close. It's the best of both worlds and all for only $55. I honestly don't remember the last time is spent so little money on shoes.

2. You ever find out about a movie a year or so after it was released and ask yourself "How did I not hear about this movie?" After Phil Knott recommended This Is England (a 2006 film written and directed by Shane Meadows) last week, this is all I've been thinking. I really can't believe that nobody I know told me about it and that I didn't find about it myself. It must have played in New York?! Anyway, it's brilliant. "The film is a drama centred on young skinheads, set in early-1980s England. Much of the film was shot in the St Ann's area of Nottingham with one section involving some abandoned houses being filmed at the former airbase RAF Newton just outside of Bingham, Nottinghamshire. Additional scenes were filmed in Grimsby, Thomas Turgoose's home town." Checkout the Wikipedia entry, the official site, the trailer, and these reviews. Rent it now!

Patti Smith Dream Of Life/Pillowface + His Airplane Chronicles

1. We love Patti Smith! But you already knew that. A new film -- Dream Of Life -- named after the 1988 EP by Smith and directed by Steven Sebring is opening at Sundance right now. So far no dates other than Sundance are listed, but I'm sure New York and LA will be shortly. Checkout the Sundance dates, the official press release (you have to check this out), the trailer, and this bio on Sebring. As soon as we hear any updates, we'll let you know. PS: Smith's NYE show this year was amazing. She just keeps getting better.

2. Superstar DJ Aoki...just kidding. DJ Steve Aoki (sister of Devon, son of Benihana founder Rocky Aoki) has a new CD out -- Pillowface + His Airplane Chronicles -- that's getting rave reviews. You can test drive a few tracks on his MySpace, download the EP in its entirety for $9.99 directly from there, and have a look at his tour dates to see if he's coming to a town near you. Don't foret to checkout his record label's site (Dim Mak) and their clothing line.

You're Unbelievable/APC SSO8/Female Masking

1. Remember EMF? This video is perfect for a sunny Friday: Unbelievable. The song "topped the charts in many countries around the world, reaching the number one in the USA in 1991. The single features sampled utterances from comedian Andrew Dice Clay." Whoa! Remember that guy. EMF so remind me of everything that's going on in London with Nu Rave at the moment, but much more pure. It was all about the music and less about hype and image. Don't forget to checkout EMF's Wikipedia entry, their MySpace and their official website, where you'll find links to videos, interviews, and photos.

2. Finally, APC has come out with a collection that doesn't suck. I love APC and always want to like their collections, but they've had a lot of sleepers in the past several years. We just got the email announcing the release of their Spring 2008 line and it looks like they're back on track. Checkout the SSO8 collection online. And in case you don't know: their scented candles rock! A bit pricey, but well worth it.

3. I really don't know what to say about this entry. I was cruising around on YouTube the other night and came across the gem of a video entitled: Nueva Olly. Nothing crazy about the name, but watch it. It's this video of someone who's into female masking. "Female masking is a sub-form of cross-dressing that involves, in addition to the wearing of women's clothing, a mask (usually made from latex) that gives a pseudo-real representation of a female face." WOW. Read the full Wikipedia entry. You'll be amazed. And checkout the full video gallery of Antonia -- the female masker who's video you just watched. Says Antonia: I AM MEXICAN GIRL I LOVE THE MASK." While you're at it, stop by the Female Mask Homepage, where you'll find a chat room and image galleries and bios on female maskers from around the world, including the lovely Jacqueline. (WOW.) Her email is listed if you want to try and get a date. It is almost Valentine's Day after all.

Monkey Town/Bernhard Willhelm's Men In Tights

1. Won't you take me down to Monkey Town. This Williamsburg restaurant/gallery/performance space rocks!! "We have created a permanent space that privileges video art, short films, feature-length films and documentaries, outside traditional galleries, movie theaters, museums, or clubs. We will also host live music, dance and other original performance. We will commission surround sound installations and continue our 'Bathroom Sound Series'. We plan to establish an artist residency." Click here for more info and to see their menu. I love it. It reminds me of the theater that used to be where Rififi is now on 11th Street in the East Village, but way better. My friend brought me there once to see my first Godard film in the 90's. The one with the blond lady selling New York Times. Breathless.

2. One of our very favorite designers -- Bernhard Willhelm -- is hooking up with Nick Knight of London's SHOWstudio to create a video for his AW08 collection entitled Men In Tights. "The latest designer electing to create a film to showcase his fashion collection, Bernhard Willhelm, will be in the studio with Nick Knight creating a movie to be previewed at the Menswear shows in Paris on the 20th of this month. Of course, we can't say too much about the collection, but Bernhard has supplied us with the working title Men in Tights so you can draw your own conclusions and tune in from 11:30 to get a load of the nylon and lycra action on set!" iminlikewithyou/Koh's Jesus With Boner

1. I've just found out about a new site that I'm already addicted to even though I'm not quite sure what to do on it yet: iminlikewithyou.com. "I'm In Like With You is a fun way to interact with your friends online. If you are just starting out here, there are some things you may want to figure out. Create A Game: A Game lets you interact with other members on iminlikewithyou. A game is kind of like a question that anyone can answer." Click here for more info and here for the About section. My first game: What's your favorite line from Planet Unicorn? So far, I've only gotten one answer, but that's because I don't know anyone who's on this site. Join, find me... And don't forget to go to this site to get the Planet Unicorn ringtone: the original or the remix. So many choices...

2. There's show up in the UK right now that's stirring up a little, well actually a lot, of controversy. It's called Gone, Yet Still featuring the work of Terence Koh. "The exhibition, entitled Gone, Yet Still, features 74 different plaster models of people or objects which Koh, 30, claims have been important in his life. As well as the 18in statue of Christ, there are models of Mickey Mouse and ET, dipped into plaster. They also have erect penises attached." People have problems with Jesus' boner it seems. This is an excerpt of an email forwarded to us by the artist: "I prayed for you at the baltic centre in gateshead today. You have problems - please get some professional help and redirect your life towards good." I'm sure Jesus got boners. He was human after all. Or was he? I can't remember the particulars of that story any longer. Checkout this article and this one for more info on the show and for more details on the controversy. Let's hope nothing gets pulled from the show. You know how crazy those Christian fundamentalists can get. If nothing else, like the cow dung portrait in Brooklyn a few years back, it will most definitely get more attention that it may have without all the hoopla benefitting Koh in the end.

The Wreck Center/The Sum Of Its Parts

1. SoHo's got a new popup shop. Or as the NY Times calls it "a store/performance space/art installation. Decorated with graffiti, gold paint and 5,800 feet of Day-Glo masking tape, the space, designed by Rafael de Cárdenas, pops, to say the least. Finally one came up to me, said Aaron Bondaroff, the project’s ringleader, and told me it was about time someone did something cool in the neighborhood again.” Read the full story here. In case you don't recognize the name, Aaron Bondaroff, better known as A-Ron, is one of the guy's behind LES shop and streetwear label aNYthing, which I've just found out he's not part of any longer! Checkout this piece on Complex's site. Looks like he's been shut out of the company by an investor he took on. Small designers and entrepreneurs beware!! Don't forget to checkout IRAK's blog while you're at it.

2. Checkout The Sum Of Its Parts -- a group show on view through 02.02.08 @ Cheim & Read. "Cheim & Read is pleased to announce a group exhibition of works by a diverse selection of artists, all of whom create artworks configured from multiple parts, sequences or series. Artists included in the show are Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois, Teresita Fernandez, Adam Fuss, Gilbert & George, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Jannis Kounellis, Bruce Nauman, Jack Pierson, John Sonsini and Andy Warhol." Where's Britney?/Magnetic Fields New EP/CutAway @ Anna Kustera

1. I think I'm unknowingly addicted to Britney Spears. When I click to YouTube's Top videos of the day and the first page of videos doesn't have a video of Britney getting a frappucino or walking from her car to somewhere, I feel like something's wrong with the world. This is a plea to the paparazzi and to Britney: Britney, please drive somewhere and buy something or walk from your car to a place; paparazzi: can you guys find her and videotape her doing nothing/something. Anything?!? I'm dying over here. Update: Britney finally did something.

2. New York indie band The Magnetic Fields is set to release a much-awaited new EP entitled Distortion. It's up in its entirety on MySpace for you to test drive until the EP comes out 01.15.08. Don't forget to checkout tour dates, the band's Wikipedia entry, and this site, a guide to the band's magnus opus 69 Songs, s three-CD collection of 69 love songs.

3. Last night, we stopped by the opening of CutAway now on at Anna Kustera (520 West 21st St). CutAway is "a group exhibition that deals with the idea of narrative interruption. The work of the four artists featured share a cinematic quality analogous to the concept of filmic cutaways or insertions of action or still images that help to condense or better explicate the dominant subject at issue." Included in the show: British artist Rachel Howard, works on paper by Danish artist Jasper Sebastian Stürup, performance-based photography and collages by Croatian artist Vlatka Horvat, and a large sculptural mixed-media installation by New York-based Gandalf Gaván. Stop by and check it out. You definitely don't want to miss Stürup's drawings and Gaván's installation piece.

JUSTICE + MySpace/Spank Rock @ Studio B/PRPS Interview

1. JUSTICE has gone big time! I've seen the posters around town, but have been too preoccupied to really process it: JUSTICE is playing MSG!!! WHAT?! "After launching its inaugural music tour last fall with headliners Say Anything and Hellogoodbye, MySpace has snagged French electronic duo JUSTICE to anchor its second branded trek, set to begin March 3 at Stubbs in Austin, Texas. Diplo, DJ Mehdi, Chromeo, Busy P and Fancy will appear on select dates of the jaunt, which wraps March 31 at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles. Tickets for the Live Nation-produced tour go on sale tomorrow (Jan. 9), available through the MySpace Music Tour profile and other outlets. The tour page will also features a Justice tour diary, music videos, backstage photos and other offerings." (Billboard) So far, all I can find on Live Nation are tickets for Boston. Keep checking back as I'm sure new tickets for the other venues will be coming out shortly.

2. Studio B is hosting what looks to be a super hot party on 02.01.08. Who's gonna be there?? you ask. SpankRock, DJ set by The Rapture, Busy P + So Me, JD Samson (from Le Tigre), Eamon Harkin. $12 pre-sale tickets available now. This one is SURE to sell out.

3. Our friends @ Debonair sent us a link to this interview they just did with Donwan Harrell owner of PRPS, one of our favorite brands. "Donwan Harrell is a legend in denim. His company, Prps, creates the jeans worn by athletic demi-gods the likes of Tom Brady and David Beckham to style icons like Brad Pitt and the Rolling Stoness. Yet you have not seen an advertisement for Prps –they don’t advertise. The celebrities that wear Prps have paid full price for their jeans, a sticker shocking $350 or more – they are not given away. But the look that Prps embodies can be had for 'Forty dollars, some sandpaper, and a can of spray starch,' says Harrell." Read the full interview here.

From The Mouths Of Babes
by David Kawa

Much has been made of the current crop of serious minded "adult" Hollywood films tanking at the box office. Look no further than the star studded Rendition or Lions for Lambs (with Tom Cruise of all people) with their pitiful grosses and you can see why there is concern for this particular genre. But is the adult film really out of style, or, is it being filtered through the voices of a younger generation?

Take two recent releases, Superbad, which has just hit DVD, and Juno, an Oscar contender and critic's delight currently in theaters.

These two movies in particular have been written by two breakouts in the business: Seth Rogan, the unlikely star of Knocked Up, is responsible for half of Superbad's witty script, and Juno was penned by an ex-stripper, Diablo Cody.

If you've seen either of these two movies, you can't help but notice the crackling language and superior pop culture references. In Superbad, a high school senior is referencing Orson Welles and the heroine in Juno at one point makes a sly dig on Diana Ross. Is this what we really expect from people born as late as 1990!?!

The dilemmas these teens go through are very real as well. The boys of Superbad are dealing with separation anxiety, as they will be going off to separate colleges in the fall, and Juno herself is struggling with an unwanted pregnancy and the repercussions that accompany it.

Why wouldn't these obviously talented screenwriters, both of whom look like they've had quite a bit of life experience, write about more age appropriate subjects? Why can't we get another Reality Bites or The Big Chill?

That being said, both movies are well worth seeing, with excellent performances, writing and direction all coming together for two of the most enjoyable films of the year.

Make sure to checkout the trailer for Juno, the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (93% of critics say yes!), and its IMDB listing.

I'm Toxic/Penelope's Better Than You Are/Popular Noise

1. This is by no means a gossip site, but given the current more-than-usual Britney Spears craze, I've decided to pay a little homage to celeb gossip by downloading a remake of Toxic by Mark Ronson featuring the late, great ODB and Tiggers. Listen to it free on HypeMachine. It's from his latest EP Version, which rocks. Checkour Ronson on MySpace. It also features my current favorite song Stop Me by Daniel Merriweather.

2. Checkout this SNL clip and this one of super annoying, yet oh so funny character Penelope. No matter what you've got or where you've been, she's always ready to top you. If you don't find this totally hysterical, stop and think: it could be a sign that you're a Penelope. We all know one or two or three... While you're at it, checkout this vintage SNL clip of Madonna and Wayne's World. Schwing!!

3. One of our favorite publications -- Popular Noise -- is set to release a new issue. Vol. 1 Issues 4-6 to be exact. One of our favorite stores -- Printed Matter (195 Tenth Avenue btwn 21st and 22nd Streets) -- is hosting a party for them this Saturday from 5-7pm to celebrate this launch. Rsvp to rsvp@popularnoise.net. "The Journal of Popular Noise is a semi annual audio magazine featuring experimental music and sound art. The journal is beautifully designed and packaged in a letter-pressed clamshell casing that unfolds to reveal three 45-rpm records, each featuring a different artist—each record is considered a different issue of the magazine." For more detailed info, checkout their site, where you can pre-buy your copy now.

The Book Of Life

1. Do you love Hal Hartley the way I love Hal Hartley? Everything before Henry Fool, which I thought was just plaing boring and dull: Flirt, The Amateur, Simple Men, The Unbelievable Truth, Trust. Checkout his IMDB page. If you haven't seen these screen gems, do yourself a favor and have a Hal Hartley maraton weekend. When it's over, stop by MoMA on 01.27.08 and watch a rarely-seen (I've never even seen it!) short film by Hartley entitled The Book Of Life. "This rarely screened short film produced for ARTE's millennial series 2000 Seen By... and shot in then-pioneering experimental high-definition video, is an absurdist take on the eschatological hell-or-high-water showdown between Jesus and Satan. Set on New Year's Eve, 1999, Hartley's riff on Revelations features indie rocker PJ Harvey playing vampish Magdalena to Martin Donovan's brooding, buttoned-down messiah and Thomas Jay Ryan's charismatic Prince of Darkness. Hartley's hipster downtown New York—today, arguably a lost paradise—is both marked by sin and kissed by grace." Oh yeah and PJ Harvey's in it. Don't miss it.

BASE Album Club Picks 4 January

One of our favorite stores in the world--super cool Miami store BASE--has hooked up this.hearts.on.fire. once again with their Album Club Picks. The picks are a very well-curated set of some of the sexiest, coolest music anywhere. I love it because it's so different from my usual taste and always introduces me to new artists that I would not have heard otherwise. You can listen to samples and buy each album by clicking on the links below.

10. THE OFFICIAL UNOFFICIALS (PR RECORDS) / The fabulous PR Records have always put out some of the best white label remixes around, and here they are compiled together for the first time-Future Jazz, deep house and broken beatz never sounded so good.

9. BRAZILECTRO 9 /With its mix of traditional Brazilian sounds and European club culture, Brazilectro continues to define how to bring world music to the forefront without losing its identity.

8. BONFIRE (SPEEKA) / Artfully swinging between folk, jazz, and soul, Speeka joins our list as one of the best of 2007.

7. ARROGANCE (SUPPERCLUB) / Supperclub, Amsterdam's answer to the Buddha Bar, continues their "nine sins" series with Arrogance, a double disc set of cool, minimal, fast and modern tracks that made this series famous.

6. BALLROOM STORIES (WALDECK) / Vienna nu-jazz/downtempo musician Waldeck's new disc Ballroom Stories is full of charm, what with, with jazz, swing, tango, and electro waltzes making this one cool lounge record.

5. HUNTERVILLE (RODNEY HUNTER) / Working again on the G-Stone label with Kruder of Kruder & Dorfmeister fame, European beatmaker Rodney Hunter returns with his trademark brand of soul, funk and electronica.

4. 10TH CHAPTER (THE RURALS) / With the same mix of soulful deep house and warm, funky grooves, along with beautiful vocals by Marie Tweek and sax by Charlie Haernshaw, the boys from Devon prove just how well they can fill the dancefloor and lift your spirit in the process.

3. LITTLE DRAGON / Featuring the beautiful vocals of Swedish/Japanese Yukimi Nagano with a hint of break beats and jazz, 80's pop and soul, Little Dragon will have you in a beautiful, chilled out mood of bliss after the first listen.

2. REMIXES/CLASSICS (FRAGILE STATE) / Fragile State are known as Chillout legends, and you can see why on their first two albums, which are included here: The Facts and the Dreams, and Voices from the Dustbowl, along with an excellent remix CD, which puts a fresh spin on some of their classic tracks.

1. HAMMOCK DREAMS (JASMON) / Daniel and Roland Voss, aka Jasmon, can neither be classified as down tempo or up, but veer somewhere in between, all the while providing an ethnic flavor mixed in with obscure samples.

7 Deadly Sins/Celux eShop/The Killing Of John Lennon

1. Ju$t Another Rich Kid has just announced that a new line of their wildly popular Indulgences line will come out in the next few weeks. A 7-piece collection of gold-dipped charms on necklaces, the much-anticipated series is based on the 7 Deadly Sins. Included in the series is a sleek shovel charm (Cokespoon #4/Gluttony), a pair of dice (Snake Eyes/Greed), and a hand grenade charm (No More War/Anger). For the rest -- Sloth, Lust, Pride, and Envy -- you'll have to stay tuned for updates. The original series was a run away hit a few years back and was shown in the galleries at Colette (Paris) and Loveless (Tokyo) and has been covered by so many magazines, we couldn't begin to name them. It was stocked in some of the coolest stores worldwide, including Odin, Celux, BASE, United Arrows, Bblessing, and Paul Smith. Stayed tuned for updates and pics.

2. Members-only Tokyo boutique Celux has a sleek new website that includes an eShop with some super hot products, and it seems like anyone anywhere with or without a membership can make a purchase. Click here to check it out. What you'll find: Neil Barrett shirts, Fendi shoes and a sick down vest, Kris Van Assche plaid pants, Number (N)ine shirts and jackets, and much more.

3. The critics seem to hate it, but I'm definitely going to go see The Killing Of John Lennon. I remember it as if it were yesterday: a dark, cold, December night and the only thing on TV was news about the killing of someone named John Lennon, whom I had absolutely no interest whatsoever in knowing anything about. Things have obviously changed. Checkout the tepid reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the trailer, clips of original news footage from 1980, and this interview on YouTube, Lennon's last. I really wish Chuck Close had done one of his early black and white portraits of Lennon. Can you imagine how sick that would have been??!
