TSOOLWe don’t quite know what to make of Swedish band The Soundtrack of Our Lives. We can’t stop listening to (some) the songs on their MySpace, but if we start to think about it, it makes us first feel old then we have flashbacks of our quasi hippie/crunchy college phase and it makes us a little depressed. Then we listen to Flipside for the 10th time today and we just stop thinking and enjoy the music.

The Soundtrack of Our Lives is an alternative rock band which formed in 1995 in Göteborg, Sweden. Most of the band’s members were formerly members of the influential Swedish punk band Union Carbide Productions.

The band had three very successful records in Sweden before their critically acclaimed breakthrough US release in 2001, Behind the Music, which was nominated for the Best Alternative Album award at the 2003 Grammy Awards.

LaarksCheck out the Laarks! While we hear that Eau Claire, WI is a hotbed of indie rock, this is the first band we know of to come out of there. Have a listen. We know you’ll love it.

Laarks was born to fill a void. Singer, songwriter and keyboard player Ian Jacoby and drummer Brian Moen began collaborating after the dissolution of previous projects (most notably Moen drummed with Amateur Love and DeYarmond Edison, which spawned bands Bon Iver and Megafaun). As old friends emigrated south(and then to northern hunting cabins, but that’s another story…), Jacoby and Moen began crafting songs togetherin a cold, damp Wisconsin basement, eventually enlisting Kyle Flater to play guitar and additional keys, and Zach Hanson to play bass.

Their latest record, not surprisingly, is a huge hit. An Exaltation of Laarks isn’t so much a laudation of the band as it is a summons to experience the exuberance and passion of finely crafted pop songs executed with contagious energy, and in stunning fidelity (especially considering the band did it themselves, from 2” tape to album art). Listening to the record is like flying a keyed kite in a thunderstorm, soaring on textured choruses and layered buildups, waiting for the lighting to strike just to feel it course through your body to your melted soles.

FencesSo we’ve gone through the entire list of bands that will perform at Noise Pop 18 and are happy to report that there’s going to be some good music. One act that we’re particularly into is called Fences.

Seattle’s Christopher Mansfeild looks heavy. Sporting a bevy of tattoos and a hard lined stare, his whispered and intimate musicianship in Fences may come as a surprise. Mansfield’s melancholic vocals and melodic strumming call to mind songwriters like Owen or Bon Iver. Filled with graceful and poetic vulnerability, Fences may be the most disarming act of the year, with Mansfield’s power already being praised by critics and fans alike.

Check out Fences on Noise Pop’s site and make sure to check him out on MySpace, where you can test drive more songs, get tour dates and check out more pics.

Yoko Ono Plastic Ono BandWith the lamification (no it’s not a word, we made it up!) of the music industry in certain respects (no names mentioned…Lady Blah Blah), we feel compelled to cover those who are so special and amazing that there will never be a replacement. Case in point: Yoko Ono. No matter what you think, there’s no refuting the fact that she’s one of a kind. So if you’ve never seen her perform, now’s the time!

Luckily, she’ll be performing with her band The Plastic Ono Band @ Noise Pop 18 this year in SF.

Before meeting John Lennon, Yoko Ono was already deeply immersed and well known in the avant-garde scene of 1960’s Greenwich Village. An experimental force, Ono has challenged the status quo with uncompromising music and film work, and her legacy lives on past any controversy that may once have surrounded her.
