“True South is black heritage bookstore / barbershop / community center on Nostrand Avenue in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. Emblazoned with the phrase “Do The Reading” above the entrance, the shop champions young black men to educate themselves. Although it conveys a civil rights-era aesthetic, it was opened in 2007 by a retired teacher, hoping to bring people together and continue an important dialogue in the black community.”
“The shop sits across the street from the Abasi Rosborough design studio. The designers walk past True South everyday and were inspired by its message and authenticity. When the owner had a stroke last month and the impending possibility of the shop closing, Abasi and Rosborough wanted to do their part in bringing attention to the store and its importance to Brooklyn“.
“Abasi Rosborough envisioned a secret meeting of activists as the inspiration for the shoot: intellectual, strong-willed leaders coming together to philosophize and debate.”
