FencesSo we’ve gone through the entire list of bands that will perform at Noise Pop 18 and are happy to report that there’s going to be some good music. One act that we’re particularly into is called Fences.

Seattle’s Christopher Mansfeild looks heavy. Sporting a bevy of tattoos and a hard lined stare, his whispered and intimate musicianship in Fences may come as a surprise. Mansfield’s melancholic vocals and melodic strumming call to mind songwriters like Owen or Bon Iver. Filled with graceful and poetic vulnerability, Fences may be the most disarming act of the year, with Mansfield’s power already being praised by critics and fans alike.

Check out Fences on Noise Pop’s site and make sure to check him out on MySpace, where you can test drive more songs, get tour dates and check out more pics.

Saskia Diez Papier 135Taking an every day object or material and creating something unexpected from it is by no means novel. It’s been done lots, especially in the last 5 or so years. Sometimes, it’s done so well, that even the most jaded of us take note and give credit where credit is due. Such is the case with one of our current favorite designers Saskia Diez and her “Papier” series, which makes use of that slippery envelope material Tyvek®. Again, she’s not the first to use it. The difference with this collection is that the designs are spot on: sleek, clever, and clearly made by someone who’s got amazing design sense.

Take up the familiar, give it further thought and add something new: a collaborative project between Saskia and Stefan Diez, the “Papier” series is an experiment in revising the classical typology: the two designers have pointed out the basic requirements to a travel bag – durability, protection and light weight – and sought for an appropriate material other than the traditional choices of leather and reinforced textiles.

There’s a German jewelry line called Workstatt:Muenchen that we’re so into right now. It shouldn’t surprise you that it’s carried at some of the hottest, most exclusive stores in the world like Atelier New York, Andreas Murkudis, Antonioli, Seibu, and L’Eclaireur.

“In some of our jewellery items you’ll be surprised by little details you find at the second or third glance. It is this love to detail that makes jewellery emotional and valuable.

The secret of our jewellery is its simplicity in design and the materials used – sterling silver, leather and gold. The basis of our design processes is clarity and authenticity. What looks like silver is silver and what looks like gold is gold. The leather makes a statement by nothing but its surface and its cut – without further adornment.

Bear HandsGuess who else is playing Noise Pop 18? Brookyn indie rockers Bear Hands. We just listed to their track What A Drag and we’re addicted!

Says Noise Pop: Bear Hands are so cool they conjure up images of trashed hotel rooms and empty broken bottles before they even play a note. The Brooklyn quartet are so cool they would probably shrug off comparisons to Kings of Leon, but they have a similar swagger and devil-may-care attitude. They are so cool that they have opened for MGMT, Vampire Weekend, Cursive and Ted Leo, but to be honest, they probably didn’t stick around to watch any of those guys actually play. The tequila isn’t going to drink itself, you know.

According to their Facebook, they’re currently in the studio recording their first full-length record. Yes!!! In the meantime, check out their page on Noise Pop’s site, their MySpace. Make sure to listen to the Cale Parks remix of What A Drag…it’s insanely addictive so proceed with caution!

Retro Super FutureFor those of us in the northern hemisphere, it’s the most dreaded month of the year. Unless you’re in Seattle, though, the sun is probably shining, which means you need shades.

This week we have 2 pairs of SUPER Flat Tops (retail $125) to give away.

SUPER, by RETROSUPERFUTURE, ignited the phenomenon of acetate sunglasses. They are made in multiple color graduations, which has generated a big trend starting in 2007. Super is the first brand to produce a complete range of colorful fashion sunglasses combining these characteristics together with a very high quality manufacturing process.

A Brand Apart Leather Travel BagWe don’t usually follow up a post on a brand with another post on the same brand in less than 10 days. We have to admit, though, we’re more than a little obsessed with Italian bag line A Brand Apart, a unisex line of leather goods.

Yes, they have a women’s line and, yes, it’s hot. Hot women’s bags are much more easy to come by than men’s bags of the same nature. We’re not sure what it is, but making a women’s leather bag that’s super chic, yet low key and well-constructed at the same time seems easy.

Men’s bag on the other hand: either their “too” casual — think Jake Spade — or they’re “toooooooooooooo” girly. Sorry folks, but it’s the truth. To make a men’s leather bag that’s at the same time super chic, yet casual and masculine must be extremely difficult because nobody can get it right, save a few like A Brand Apart, which is why we’re obsessed! We know you’ll agree.

Check their Multi Pocket Leather Travel Bag here and more styles from the line online in Antonioli’s eShop.

Adam Kimmel FW10

We love fashion and we love art, so naturally we’re going to love a collection by New York menswear designer Adam Kimmel that is inspired by bad boy American artist/portraitist George Condo.

“Out of all the look books that I’ve done and artists I’ve been fortunate enough to meet, George Condo always struck me as the most bad-ass, stylish mother of them all. My inspiration has always been rooted in American culture and I’ve always sought to celebrate my heroes through my collections. Whether it be Semina Culture, Malanga’s screen tests for Warhol or Krantz’ Marlboro men, George Condo fits the bill as a true American icon.”

The Big PinkOne of our favorite bands of last year — The Big Pink — is going on tour. They seem to be a crowd favorite, so if you’re anything like us, you’ll want to get tickets now.

Make sure to check out their MySpace, where you’ll find the complete list of cities and dates on the tour, and the official video for Velvet, which we listened to at least 200 times last year. We didn’t even know there was a video! I’m sure you’ll watch it for yourselves, but if there’s any doubt as to whether you should or not, trust us: watch it. It’s gorgeous. Don’t forget the video for their other hit — Dominos. It’s addictive.

Blaak Homme F/W 10

Another menswear line we’ve had our eye on — Blaak Homme — seems to be making a bit of a meteoric rise at the moment and given what we saw this past week at Paris Fashion Week, it should come as no surprise.

For F/W 10, designers Sachiko Okada and Aaron Sharif see only in black and white. While other designers we’re into aren’t seeing in black and white, per se, there are numerous collections that have shown in the past few years who severely limit their palettes (generally to two colors) when designing their collections, which helps in giving lines an overall sense of continuity that’s much more difficult to achieve otherwise. Black will always be the de facto color for the serious fashion designer, but lately white has taken back seat to beige and taupe, the minimalist, not-so-stark and muted cousins to black’s former partner.

Check out the images below for a taste of what’s up for Blaak Homme for F/W10. We think you’ll like it.

Boris Bidjan Saberi FW10

Another of our favorite designers — Boris Bidjan Saberi — showed this past week in Paris. As expected: the collection is amazing with equal parts construction and deconstruction, just the way we like it.

Born in Munich from German mother and Iranian father, Saberi started designing menswear under his own name in 2006.

Precise, edgy, modern, the designer focuses his creations on functionality and a strong feeling of freedom and innovation. His roots and taste for street culture drives him to develop the idea of “dark hip hop style”, mixing a sophisticated casual wear and post gothic influences.

The collection A/W 10- 11 is called Primitive Sculpture. It’s an evolution from a primitive wood statue of sculpture modeling a human body. Straight and angular, rough and rigid.

See for yourself in the pics below.
