CyrusRemember when we went a little crazy talking about that mumblecore movie Puffy Chair and you all asked yourselves “What the F are these crack heads talking about?” If not, refresh your memory. (Hats off to anyone who’d actually seen this prior to our post or who has seen it since.) If you haven’t, rent it. It’s awesome.

Well, last weekend we when we went to see the new Joan Rivers documentary A Piece of Work — which we highly recommend — we saw the trailer for Cyrus, which is by the Jay and Mark Duplass, who made the Puffy Chair.

Cyrus is an amazing movie: its subject matter is true to the mumblecore genre, but with a star-studded cast (who are amazing), a bigger budget, and more experience under their belts, which makes for a smoother ride than their previous films.

Check out the film’s site for more info and to watch the trailer. Our only complaint (and it’s not a complaint that means don’t see it or we didn’t like it b/c we LOVED it) is that the editing of the trailer really makes it seem like it’s only a comedy and it’s not. There’s comedy from start to finish (Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly are incredibly funny together), but it’s not a comedy. It’s comedy mixed with serious mixed with awkward interpersonal life stuff. Go see it. It’s awesome, but it’s not the comedy the trailer makes it out to be.

Le Labo Vintage CandleYou may not know this about us, but we are crazy for candles. We just found a series of Vintage Candles by New York perfumers Le Labo that we smell sooooooo good we want 2 of each.

Le Labo proposes its cult candle collection in a very unique vintage tin can container, distressed thanks to a very special aging process. The over packaging, a cardboard box, is a stunning piece of design by itself. Our vintage candles are highly concentrated in oils and hand poured in the U.S. These weigh 195 grs and their burning time is about 50 hours. They are made with 100% soy wax and cotton wicks.

Get yours online in Le Labo’s eShop.

As an avid reader of the blog, you know we rarely cover housewares or linen or items of that ilk. Well, we were walking back from the ACE Hotel recently and happened by ABC Carpet. If you’re not from New York, you need to know that ABC Carpet is simultaneously good and evil — the stuff is amazing, but makes you realize just how poor you really are.

So we’re upstairs in the linen department — or whatever it is they call it — and everything we look at is the hottest thing we’ve ever seen and we casually check price tags and CANNOT BELIEVE THERE’S A SINGLE PILLOW SHAM THAT COSTS $230. It’s that kind of store. We wander into the MATTEO section and we can’t help ourselves: the sheets, the shams, the patterns, the fabrics — not frilly not overdone. The bells start to ring. It’s quality that you can sense without having to check the fabric content or even touch it. You can just tell: it’s that good. It’s cool, but not overdone. It’s masculine. It’s hot. We left feeling bad about ourselves: who can afford a $450 duvet cover? Someone, obviously, just not us!

Check out MATTEO’s site and their Facebook page. We hope your bank account has more zeros than ours.

Velvet Underground New York Art Rizzoli

We stopped in St Mark’s Books yesterday and found a book called The Velvet Underground New York Art that we think rocks. Images of the band are great, but it’s the posters, flyers, and other promotional items that take the cake.

The Velvet Underground is an astonishing assembly of rare objects and artworks and the first book of its scale to document the formative years of the band. From never-before-seen photographs of the band’s first live show in New York to Andy Warhol’s cover and poster designs, Lou Reed’s handwritten music and lyrics, underground press clippings and controversial reviews, flyers, handbills, and posters, the materials here comprise a uniquely comprehensive survey of the first rock group ever to transcend the genre and embrace underground popular culture.

Including a conversation recorded especially for the book between founding members Lou Reed and Maureen Tucker, this beautifully illustrated book is the first to present a definitive picture of the band’s genesis and development in the extraordinary New York scene of the mid- to late-1960s.

The Wright

It seems to be a trend these days: take insanely outdated museum cafe, get high-profile architect, redesign said cafe turning it into a restaurant, and hire a top-notch chef to serve fine food instead of the $20 tuna sandwiches that nobody but 65 year old ladies would buy.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Guggenheim’s Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building, the museum opens The Wright to the public on 12.11.09. Much to our enjoyment, a site-specific sculpture by one of our favorite British artists Liam Gillick was commissioned for the space and runs around the intimately-sized dining room.

We stopped by the opening of the redesigned Guggenheim Cafe the other night and the verdict’s in: it’s hot and we’re not just saying that because they loaded us up with free food and booze. The space is sleek and cool and the food is amazing — from pork belly to parsnip soup to seared scallops.

Stop by and see for yourself. It’s the perfect place to have a drink and a snack, even if you’re not going to the museum.
