Here We Go Magic1. Who’s in the band and who plays what?
HWGM is five people; Luke Temple sings/plays guitar, Mike Bloch sings/plays guitar, Jen Turner sings/plays bass, Peter Hale sings/plays drums, and I, Kristina Lieberson sing/play keyboards.

2. Whose music has most influenced yours?
Krautrock is a big influence for us- so bands like Can, Neu! and Kraftwerk are huge. R Stevie Moore. Neil Young. Dan Can’t Get Off The Toilet.

3. What’s your favorite/least favorite aspect of the music industry in the age of the internet?
The thing that’s great about the blogging generation is that it gives the little bands, with no finicial backing, no label, no identity even, to be heard. The downfall is the exact opposite-because everything can be so image driven and fashion concious, it doesn’t even matter what the music sounds like, so the fluff can really rise to the surface, leaving the music with real spirit to go unnoticed.

4. Best show so far? City with the best audience?
There’ve been a couple. Primavera festival in Barcelona was amazing. Flèche D’or in Paris. Emo’s in Austin last night. And both Paris and Austin have great audiences. Texas in general is a really fun state to play in.

The Henry Clay PeopleWe’re on a roll with interviews this week. 2. Whose music has most influenced yours?
The Replacements are my favorite band.

Favorite- easy access to tons of new music. Least favorite- mystique has been lost and audiences are growing way too fickle.

4. Best show so far? City with the best audience?
Best show on this current tour probably has to go to Atlanta. They were very enthusiastic and we had our buddy Chuck join us on stage to cover a T. Rex tune. Overall our favorite audiences have been Detroit, Portland, Boston, and Chicago. Those kids come out ready to have a good time.

OberhoferWe’re really diggin’ Brooklyn by way of Tacoma crooner Oberhofer. In case you missed it, we posted a track Away From You last week. Check it out here. We had our people talk to their people and, luckily, Oberhofer took a few minutes out of his busy busy schedule to answer our music version of 10 Questions. As expected, his answers are as interesting and thoughtful as his music.

1. Who’s in the band and who plays what?
The live band consists of: Pete Sustarsic (drums), Andrew Heaton (guitar/glockenspiel), Mike Parham (bass), and I play guitar and sing.

2. Whose music has most influenced yours?
I can’t necessarily speak for everyone in the band, but some songs nearest and dearest to me are those of Marty Anderson, Alden Penner, Mark Linkous, and Jason Lytle.

3. What’s your favorite/least favorite aspect of the music industry in the age of the internet?
I can’t complain!!!!!! I love how easy it is to access so many people, and those people like it, they’ll post it on their blogs!!! Everyone has blogs. It’s not a matter of simply having connections, just a matter of working hard.

4. Best show so far? City with the best audience?
I think my favorite show so far was playing Webster Hall in April of this year. All of our friends were there and everyone was dancing. It was super fun.

The designers from Swedish menswear line Uniforms for the Dedicated took a minute out to answer our questions. True to our stereotypes of Swedes, the answers are at the same time humble, realistic, and logical. Just like their clothing?? Make sure to check out their site for more info on the line.

1. What turned you on to clothing and how old were you when it happened?
It was cold where I grew up, clothes was a necessity.

2. Tell me about your fashion training: fashion school or self-taught? Apprenticeship/internship?
We definitely choose the hard way to enter the industry. No schooling or prior experience. An almost devastating amount of hours of trial and error. At the same time it’s interesting how fast you can learn things. Since we didn’t have any experience a big part of our progress has evolved through a network of people collaborating with Uniforms. Friends, parents, students on internship etc. Everybody helping out in his or her own way.

3. What about being a fashion designer do you like the most? The least?
I could have been a carpenter and answered this question the same way. There is a nice satisfaction seeing an idea coming to life. Since Uniforms is collective of creative people and not only one designer we have more ideas to take into consideration. Fulfilling the ideas we gather as a group is a struggle and at the same time a considerably more interesting and satisfactory way to work.

4. Do you have a muse? If so, who? How does s/he inspire your designs?

1. What turned you on to clothing and how old were you when it happened?
My first tweed suit was my grandfathers and I had it altered to fit. He had already worn it in for me. I still draw inspiration from that suit.

2. Tell me about your fashion training: fashion school or self-taught? Apprenticeship/internship?
Self-taught. I did a textile apprenticeship then started-off selling second hand clothing on Portobello Road.

3. What about being a fashion designer do you like the most? The least?
It’s like being a kid in a sweet shop. All day and every day I get to look at great textiles and check out what people are wearing. What I like least – the politics.

Ju$t Another Rich Kid Damir Doma

In just three shorts years, Croatian-born German menswear designer Damir Doma has made quite a name for himself in the fashion industry. After graduating magna cum laude from fashion school, he had the insight to head to fashion hot spot Antwerp, where he worked first for designer Dirk Schoenberger and then for Raf Simons.

It was his time spent assisting Simons that broadened and shaped Doma’s perception of fashion and the arts. Simons — a pioneer menswear designer who so eloquently mixes high fashion with street wear and did so with the precision of a master artisan — created a new genre of menswear like nothing we’d seen before. His atelier was the perfect place for Doma to not only fall in love with fashion, but to hone his craft.

In 2007, Damir Doma the menswear line was launched, debuting during Paris Fashion Week to critical acclaim. Like his mentor, Doma’s collection occupies a space all its own.

Have you always been interested in fashion?

I grew up with fashion — my mother is a designer herself. When I was a kid, my sister and I spent quite some time in her atelier playing with fabrics and drawing. My first real fashion moment was when I was 13 years old. I bought this amazing Helmut Lang raincoat. I must still have it.

Can you tell me a bit about your design process, from concept to completion?
Basically my concept and my philosophy is ongoing, which means that I never stop creating new material. While I work on one season, I already know what I want to improve and change for next season. The biggest part of my work is the conceptual period and the selection of my materials. This is the base of each collection and that’s why I take all the time I need to build a really strong base. Once this is done the job is actually quite easy and quick.

Ju$t Another Rich Kid / The xx Interview

Ju$t Another Rich Kid The xxJu$t Another Rich Kid interviewed one of our favorite bands — The xx — for CITY. Check it out!

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times: there’s so much music on the market now that it’s impossible to keep up. Today’s “it” band, even if they’re amazing musicians who can perform, network, and smile for the cameras, will soon be steam rolled by 20 newer, cooler bands that will capture our limited attention spans and bottomless hunger for the latest, greatest thing. I’m actually not even sure that the term “it” band is as relevant as it may have been a few years ago, when EVERYONE was going crazy for Arcade Fire, for example. It seems to be a consensus that although there were a few bands who were much-sought after during CMJ given the insanely large number of performances, nobody came out as THE band of the moment.

Thankfully, though, I did my homework and got in on interviewing one of the more sought-after acts of the moment London’s The xx. While The xx have gotten a lot of buzz and press in the UK, they’re still relatively unknown in the US, which I found out the hard way a few nights prior to the interview. I was out having drinks with friends and mentioned that I’d be interviewing The xx at Music Hall of Williamsburg that Friday. One friend who listens to a lot of music, had never heard of the band, and another who has a radio show hadn’t either! I’d like to say I wasn’t shocked – I really was – but I will admit, I wasn’t surprised. Six months ago, I’d never heard of The xx.
